About Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach is one of America's most visited coastal destinations β€” a city of nearly half a million people (the largest US city by land area) where 35 miles of pristine Atlantic shoreline define daily life. The main resort area along Atlantic Avenue is anchored by a famous 3-mile boardwalk lined with hotels, restaurants, and the energy of one of the mid-Atlantic's busiest beach communities. The scale of Virginia Beach's beach infrastructure is remarkable β€” more than 400 hotels and resorts, dozens of surf shops, and year-round ocean access.

The surf culture here is deeply rooted and genuinely excellent β€” Virginia Beach consistently produces elite US competitive surfers and has hosted major East Coast surf events. The First Street jetty area near Rudee Inlet is the most famous break, producing consistent rideable waves even in small conditions. The city's Surf & Rescue Museum on the boardwalk documents the history of both surf culture and ocean rescue along the Virginia coast.

North of the main resort strip, the beach transitions dramatically β€” the False Cape State Park and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge extend for miles as completely undeveloped barrier island wilderness, accessible only by boat or trail. This extraordinary contrast β€” major resort metropolis on one end, pristine wilderness on the other β€” makes Virginia Beach uniquely compelling. The city's military heritage, with multiple major bases including the world's largest naval station, Naval Station Norfolk, adds another dimension to a multifaceted beach destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Virginia Beach?
June through August are peak season with warm water (75–82Β°F) and full resort operations, but crowds and prices peak in July. Late May and September offer excellent conditions with smaller crowds and lower prices β€” the water is still warm in September at 72–76Β°F. Surfers prefer October through March for the best Atlantic swells from nor'easters. Virginia Beach also hosts major events year-round, including the Patriotic Festival (July 4th) and the East Coast Surfing Championships.
Is Virginia Beach safe for swimming?
Generally very safe β€” the resort area has excellent lifeguard coverage from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The beach has moderate surf that can produce rip currents, particularly after storms; always follow flag warnings. The water is clear enough to see a few feet in normal conditions. Jellyfish (sea nettles) are common in late summer and can cause painful stings β€” check beach reports before swimming.
What are the best areas of Virginia Beach?
The Oceanfront/Boardwalk area (17th-40th Streets) offers the full resort experience with maximum facilities and activities. The North End (above 40th Street) is quieter and more residential. The Sandbridge area at the south end is remote, uncrowded, and backs onto the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge. Chic's Beach (Chesapeake Bay side) offers calmer waters good for kayaking and is popular with families with very young children.
