My Khe Beach is the jewel of Da Nang's coastline — a sweeping 30-kilometre arc of fine white sand running along the South China Sea. Known internationally as "China Beach" after American soldiers came to rest and relax here during the Vietnam War, it has been transformed since reunification into one of Southeast Asia's most spectacular urban beaches. The beach stretches virtually unbroken from the foot of the Hai Van Pass in the north all the way down past the Marble Mountains in the south.
The water at My Khe is warm, clear, and ideal for swimming from May through September when the weather is settled and the sea is calm. During these months, lifeguards patrol the main swimming zones and the beach buzzes with activity — volleyball players, surf schools, jet skis, and seafood restaurants serving fresh catches from the nearby fishing fleet. The wide expanse of sand means there is always room to find your own quiet corner, even during the peak holiday season when Vietnamese families flock here from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Outside the main tourist season, My Khe takes on a more local character. Early mornings bring joggers, tai chi practitioners, and fishermen dragging their basket boats across the sand. The sunrises here — with the sea glowing pink and gold against a backdrop of distant mountains — are among the most spectacular in Vietnam. A comprehensive promenade lined with hotels, seafood restaurants, and cafes makes My Khe one of the easiest and most rewarding beach destinations in Vietnam to explore.
Da Nang International Airport is just 3 km away. Taxis and ride-share apps (Grab) make getting to the beach easy and cheap. The beach runs parallel to Vo Nguyen Giap coastal road — most hotels are within walking distance.
May through September is peak beach season with calm seas and sunshine. The typhoon season runs October–November with rough surf. December–April sees cooler, sometimes rainy weather but the beach is quieter and atmospheric.
Swim only between the safety flags where lifeguards patrol. Rent a surfboard for 100,000 VND/hour from local surf shops. Arrive early for fresh grilled seafood at the beachside restaurants — the squid and shrimp are outstanding.
