About Mustang Island Beach

Mustang Island is an 18-mile barrier island off the central Texas Gulf Coast, separated from the mainland by the Corpus Christi Ship Channel and the Aransas Pass. The island is anchored at its northern end by the beloved Port Aransas fishing village β€” one of Texas's most character-rich coastal towns β€” and includes Mustang Island State Park in its middle section, which preserves 5 miles of the best natural barrier island beach on the Texas coast. Unlike the highly developed Padre Island National Seashore, Mustang Island mixes working fishing community, state park wilderness, and classic Texas drive-on beach culture in a thoroughly satisfying package.

The surfing on Mustang Island is among the best consistently available on the mid-Texas coast. Port Aransas area breaks produce rideable waves more frequently than most Texas Gulf beaches during south-southeast swells and winter frontal systems β€” typically 2–5 foot surf during good conditions. The local surf community is small but dedicated, and several surf shops in Port Aransas provide lessons, rentals, and conditions updates. The jetties at the channel entrance also create a reliable surf break for experienced riders.

Mustang Island State Park (between Port Aransas and the southern end of the island) offers primitive beachfront camping, which is among the most beloved camping experiences in Texas β€” falling asleep to Gulf waves with the Milky Way overhead, awaking to sandpiper tracks and pelican squadrons. The park also hosts Kemp's ridley sea turtle nesting from April to July, and staff regularly coordinate with Texas Sea Grant programs to monitor and protect nests. The park is reached from Corpus Christi via State Highway 361 or the free Port Aransas Ferry from Aransas Pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mustang Island good for surfing?
Yes β€” among the better surf destinations on the Texas coast. The island's orientation and geography catches southeast groundswells better than the Galveston area, and fall and winter frontal systems can produce excellent waves. Typical surf is 2–4 feet, with occasional 5–7 foot waves during storm events. The Port Aransas jetties create a reliable hollow break for experienced surfers. Multiple surf schools operate in Port Aransas for beginners. The local shop Surf Shack (check current operators) provides board rentals and daily conditions reports.
Can I camp on the beach at Mustang Island?
Yes β€” Mustang Island State Park offers beachfront camping that is among the most popular in Texas. Both primitive campsites (tent camping on the beach) and sites with water and electrical hookups for RVs are available. Reservations through the Texas State Parks reservation system are strongly recommended for spring break and summer weekends. The experience of camping directly on the Gulf shore with access to the surf at dawn is beloved by generations of Texas families. Drive-on beach camping (outside the state park in the free county areas) also exists on parts of the island.
What is the difference between Mustang Island and Padre Island?
Mustang Island and North Padre Island were historically one connected barrier island β€” they are now separated only by the JFK Causeway which built a channel. Mustang Island (north) has the Port Aransas town, state park infrastructure, and more development. North Padre Island (south) is mostly Padre Island National Seashore β€” 70 miles of completely undeveloped barrier island accessible only by driving the beach. Most families and surf visitors use Mustang Island/Port Aransas as the base, with the National Seashore offering a more adventurous alternative south of the causeway.
