About Paje Beach

Paje Beach has transformed from a quiet fishing village into East Africa's undisputed kitesurfing mecca. Located on Zanzibar's southeast coast, the beach benefits from consistent trade winds that blow reliably from June through October, creating ideal conditions for both beginners and advanced kiteboarders. The vast, shallow lagoon that appears at low tide is a dream for learners โ€” flat, waist-deep water stretching hundreds of metres offshore.

Beyond kitesurfing, Paje retains a genuine bohemian charm. The village is home to colourful cafรฉs, yoga studios, and craft shops run by a vibrant mix of locals and expatriates. At low tide, the exposed sandflats create an otherworldly landscape where locals search for shellfish and children play football on the wet sand โ€” a scene that captures the authentic rhythm of Zanzibari coastal life.

The nearby Jozani Forest โ€” Zanzibar's only national park โ€” is home to the rare red colobus monkey found nowhere else on Earth. Combine a morning in the forest with an afternoon on the beach, and you have one of Tanzania's most unforgettable day experiences. When the wind drops, the turquoise water becomes perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience to kitesurf at Paje?
Not at all! Paje is one of the world's best spots for beginners. The shallow, flat lagoon at low tide provides a safe learning environment, and several professional kite schools offer courses from complete beginner to advanced levels.
How do the tides affect the beach?
Paje experiences significant tidal changes. At low tide, the water recedes far from shore, exposing vast sandflats. At high tide, the turquoise water returns for swimming. Kitesurfing works well in both conditions, with the lagoon particularly good at low tide.
What is the best wind season for kitesurfing?
The kusi season from June to October brings the strongest and most consistent southeast trade winds, making it prime kiting season. The kaskazi season from December to February also brings lighter northerly winds suitable for beginners.
