Matemwe Beach occupies a stunning stretch of Zanzibar's northeast coast, where white sand meets the Indian Ocean and the legendary Mnemba Atoll shimmers on the horizon. This is one of Zanzibar's most peaceful and photogenic beaches, favoured by travellers seeking tranquillity and world-class snorkelling without the crowds found at more popular spots.
The beach is defined by its dramatic tidal patterns. At low tide, the water retreats to reveal vast coral flats dotted with tide pools teeming with marine life β starfish, sea urchins, and small reef fish are easily spotted. Local villagers use this time to collect shellfish and octopus among the exposed coral. When the tide returns, the water transforms into a pristine snorkelling playground where colourful reef fish, sea turtles, and even dolphins can be seen.
Just a short boat ride away, Mnemba Atoll is considered one of East Africa's finest dive and snorkel sites, with exceptional visibility and an abundance of marine species including green turtles, dolphins, and whale sharks during migration season. Back on shore, a handful of exclusive boutique lodges provide an intimate, barefoot-luxury experience that perfectly complements the wild beauty of this remote coastline.
Access is via sandy paths from the main road through the village. The beach terrain is natural and uneven in places, especially on the coral flats at low tide. Reef shoes are recommended for exploring the tidal areas.
Fly into Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ), then drive approximately 45 minutes northeast to Matemwe. Most lodges arrange airport transfers. The road is paved most of the way with a short unpaved section.
