Kiwengwa Beach is one of the longest and most popular stretches of sand on Zanzibar's east coast. Lined with towering coconut palms and backed by several well-appointed all-inclusive resorts, it offers a comfortable and easy beach holiday experience for families and couples alike. The white sand is soft and pristine, stretching for kilometres in both directions.
The east coast location means Kiwengwa experiences significant tidal variation โ at low tide, the water retreats to reveal wide sandbanks where you can walk far out into the warm, ankle-deep water. High tide returns the deep turquoise sea perfect for swimming and water sports. Many resorts have swimming pools for guests who prefer not to time their swims with the tides.
Beyond the resorts, Kiwengwa retains a genuine local character. The nearby Kiwengwa Caves hold cultural significance for the Swahili community, and the village itself is a friendly place to explore. The beach also serves as a great base for excursions to Mnemba Atoll, Stone Town, and the island's famous spice plantations, with most resorts offering organised day trips.
Most resorts provide paved or wooden walkways to the beach. The sand is flat and wide, making it accessible for most visitors. Resort-specific accessibility features vary โ check with your accommodation in advance.
Fly into Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ), then drive approximately 40 minutes northeast to Kiwengwa. Most resorts provide airport transfers. Taxis and dala dalas are also available from Stone Town.
