Kendwa Beach stretches along Zanzibar's northwest coast, just south of the famous Nungwi village. What sets Kendwa apart from most of Zanzibar's beaches is its remarkably stable tide β the water barely recedes, meaning you can swim in warm, crystal-clear turquoise water at any hour. This makes it arguably the most swimmable beach on the entire island.
The beach has earned a reputation as Zanzibar's party capital, hosting legendary full-moon parties at Kendwa Rocks that draw revellers from across the island. But beyond the nightlife, Kendwa offers a deeply relaxing daytime experience β long walks on pristine white sand, spectacular sunsets over the Indian Ocean, and a laid-back atmosphere that perfectly blends comfort with authentic island spirit.
Visitors can explore nearby spice farms that have defined Zanzibar's identity for centuries, take a day trip to the historic Stone Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, or simply spend the day floating in the gentle offshore waters. With excellent beachfront accommodation ranging from boutique lodges to lively backpacker hostels, Kendwa caters to every type of traveller.
The beach is easily accessed from the main road via short sandy paths. The flat, wide beach is suitable for most visitors. Several resorts have accessible pathways leading directly to the sand.
Fly into Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ), then take a taxi or arranged transfer approximately 50 minutes northwest. Dala dalas (local minibuses) also run from Stone Town to the northwest coast.
