About Jambiani Beach

Jambiani Beach is one of Zanzibar's longest and most unspoilt stretches of coastline, running for several kilometres along the island's southeast shore. Unlike the more tourist-developed areas of Nungwi and Kendwa, Jambiani remains a working fishing village where daily life revolves around the rhythm of the tides. At low tide, the beach transforms as local women wade into the shallows to tend their seaweed farms β€” a practice that has become an important source of income for the community.

The beach itself is strikingly beautiful β€” fine white sand fringed with palm trees, stretching seemingly without end in both directions. The lack of large resorts means you can walk for miles without seeing another tourist, making it perfect for those seeking solitude and an authentic African coastal experience. Children play in the shallows, fishermen repair their nets, and traditional dhows bob gently in the turquoise water.

Jambiani has become a hub for responsible and community-based tourism. Visitors can participate in cooking classes learning traditional Swahili recipes, join guided village walks, or learn about the seaweed farming process from the women who tend the underwater plots. The village also serves as a convenient base for exploring Jozani Forest and the nearby east coast beaches of Paje and Bwejuu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jambiani Beach good for swimming?
Swimming is best at high tide when the water is deep enough along the shore. At low tide, the water recedes significantly, but you can wade far out into the shallow, warm lagoon β€” an experience in itself.
How is Jambiani different from other Zanzibar beaches?
Jambiani offers a much more authentic and quiet experience. It has fewer tourists, no large resorts, and a strong connection to local Swahili culture. It's ideal for travellers who want to experience the real Zanzibar rather than a resort setting.
Can I visit the seaweed farms?
Yes! Several community organisations offer guided tours of the seaweed farms. You'll learn about the cultivation process, its importance to the local economy, and even have the chance to help with harvesting. It's a fascinating cultural experience.
