Bwejuu Beach lies on Zanzibar's southeast coast, occupying the peaceful stretch between the busier Paje and the quiet fishing village of Jambiani. It is often described as the east coast's best-kept secret β a long, uninterrupted expanse of white sand backed by some of the most photogenic coconut palms on the island. The beach has a timeless quality that makes it easy to forget the modern world entirely.
The village of Bwejuu moves to the ancient rhythm of the tides. Fishermen launch their outrigger canoes at dawn, women tend seaweed plots in the shallows at low tide, and children play in the warm water as the sun climbs. For visitors, this authentic Zanzibari atmosphere is the main draw β a chance to experience genuine island life alongside genuinely welcoming people.
Bwejuu has a small but growing collection of guesthouses and boutique hotels that maintain the area's low-key character. From here, it's an easy walk along the beach south to Jambiani or north to Paje, making it an excellent base for exploring the entire east coast on foot. The nearby Jozani Forest is a short drive away, offering the chance to see the endemic red colobus monkey in its natural habitat.
The beach is accessed via sandy village paths. The wide, flat sand is easy to walk on. Facilities are basic but adequate. The village has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for visitors exploring on foot.
Fly into Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ), then drive approximately 45 minutes southeast to Bwejuu. Taxis and hotel transfers are available. Dala dalas run from Stone Town to the east coast villages.
