Unawatuna Beach curves in a near-perfect horseshoe just 5 km south of the historic Galle Dutch Fort — listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beach has been shaped by a barrier reef that runs across the mouth of the bay, breaking the Indian Ocean swell and creating a calm, shallow lagoon ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The crescent of golden-white sand is lined by palm trees, and a double row of beach restaurants and guesthouses has developed behind it, giving the area a warm, convivial atmosphere that makes it one of Sri Lanka's most popular beach destinations.
Snorkelling at Unawatuna is excellent: the reef directly in front of the beach is home to hundreds of species of reef fish, brain coral, sea fans, and resident sea turtles that glide through the gardens with impressive regularity. Several dive centres along the beach offer PADI courses and guided dives to deeper sites including a Japanese war wreck in 15 m of water just offshore. Glass-bottom boat tours are an excellent option for non-swimmers who want to observe the reef community without getting wet.
The beach village behind the sand is one of Sri Lanka's most developed beach tourism areas, with dozens of restaurants serving fresh seafood, Sri Lankan rice and curry, and wood-fired pizza, along with yoga studios, Ayurvedic massage shops, and boutique guesthouses in tropical garden settings. The combination of reef-protected swimming, heritage tourism at Galle Fort, reliable infrastructure, and outstanding food makes Unawatuna the most all-round appealing beach on the south coast for families and couples alike.
Unawatuna is 130 km from Colombo (2–2.5 hrs via Southern Expressway), or take the coastal train to Galle then a tuk-tuk (5 km, 10 mins). The Colombo–Matara train stops at Unawatuna station, making it very accessible. Trains from Colombo Fort take about 3 hours.
November to April is the dry season for the south coast — the water is crystal clear and the reef is at its best. The SW monsoon (May–October) can bring rough surf, but the sheltered bay is still swimmable on many days. Pair with a visit to Galle Fort year-round.
Stay in one of the guesthouses directly behind the beach for easy access. Walk or tuk-tuk to Galle Fort for a half-day of history, cafés, and boutique shopping. Book diving in advance during peak season. Avoid swimming at the far right end of the bay where current can be strong after rain.
