Arugam Bay — known to locals simply as "A-Bay" — sits on Sri Lanka's remote eastern coast and has been recognised as one of the top ten surf spots in the world. The main point break at the southern end of the bay is a long, mellow right-hander that peels consistently for 200 metres or more on a good swell, making it perfect for intermediate to advanced surfers. The wave is forgiving by point break standards — not as powerful as Indonesian or Hawaiian equivalents — which makes it a realistic ambition for surfers at all levels. During the April–October surf season, the offshore trade winds clean up the wave into perfect corduroy lines at dawn.
Beyond surfing, Arugam Bay has an exceptional natural setting. Wild elephants regularly swim across the lagoon behind the town at dusk, watched by cafe-goers with cold beers — an extraordinary scene that somehow emphasises the wild, end-of-the-world feeling of this remote bay. Kumana National Park is just 35 km south and is considered one of the best bird sanctuaries in Asia, with hundreds of migrant species passing through between March and July. Crocodile safaris in the adjacent Pottuvil Lagoon are also popular.
The social scene in Arugam Bay is one of Sri Lanka's most international — a sun-bleached, happy, unpretentious culture built around dawn paddles, communal curry lunches, and sunset fires on the beach. The town has seen rapid development in recent years but retains its laid-back core. When the surf is pumping, this is one of the most exhilarating places in Asia. When the waves are small, it's one of the most relaxed.
Arugam Bay is 320 km east of Colombo — about 6–7 hours by bus or 5 hours by car. Most visitors take the night bus from Colombo to Pottuvil and a tuk-tuk for the final 3 km. Alternatively, fly Colombo–Batticaloa with FitsAir and take a bus south (2 hrs). The journey is long but the road to A-Bay is part of the adventure.
April to October is the surf season for the east coast (opposite to the south). June–September brings the biggest swells. Note: while the south coast is in heavy monsoon during this period, the east coast is typically sunny and dry. This seasonal contrast makes Arugam Bay reachable in the Sri Lankan shoulder season.
Book accommodation weeks in advance for June–August peak season. Take a surfboard lesson at one of the local schools — instructors are experienced and rates are very affordable. Don't miss sunset at the lagoon to watch elephants crossing. Hire a tuk-tuk driver for a full-day wildlife tour including Kumana and Pottuvil Lagoon.
