About Playa del Silencio

Playa del Silencio earns its name. This remarkable cove near Cudillero in western Asturias is enclosed on three sides by steep green headlands that absorb the sound of the surrounding world, leaving only the whisper of Atlantic waves on smooth pebbles and sand. There are no chiringuitos, no sun-lounger hire, no facilities of any kind — just the raw beauty of the Asturian coast in its most undeveloped form.

The beach is divided by rocky outcrops into several smaller coves at low tide, each with its own character — some sandy, some pebbled, with sea caves accessible when conditions are calm. The clear Atlantic water, protected from the prevailing west wind by the headland, is remarkably calm for an Atlantic-facing Asturian beach and perfect for swimming on fine summer days. The surrounding clifftops are covered in lush green grass grazed by cattle — a characteristically Asturian landscape of cliffs, cows, and sea.

Access via the narrow lane and small car park above the beach naturally limits visitor numbers — you generally won't find large crowds even at the height of summer. The steep path down requires about 10 minutes of walking and good footwear. You must bring food, water, and sun protection — there is literally nothing at the beach itself. This is part of its appeal: a beach for people who want to experience the Asturian coast as it actually is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any facilities at Playa del Silencio?
No — absolutely none. There is no water, no food, no toilets, no lifeguard, and no facilities of any kind at the beach. This is part of its appeal and is actively maintained: the beach remains completely undeveloped. You must bring everything you need, including water, food, and sun protection. Pack out all rubbish.
Is Playa del Silencio safe for swimming?
Swimming is generally safe on calm days. The headland provides some shelter from Atlantic swell. However, there are no lifeguards and there can be currents around the rocky headlands. Check wave forecasts, swim only in calm conditions, and do not enter sea caves when the swell is running. Atlantic water temperatures are cool by Spanish standards.
What is the best time to visit Playa del Silencio?
July and August for swimming — the water is at its warmest. However, weekday visits in June or September offer a better balance of warmth and quiet. In autumn and winter the beach has a dramatic, moody beauty and is almost always empty, though swimming is not recommended and Atlantic storms can be severe.
