About Playa de Oyambre

Playa de Oyambre is one of the finest Atlantic surf beaches in northern Spain — a broad, wave-swept expanse of golden sand within the Parque Natural de Oyambre, backed by green meadows, wetland dunes, and with the snow-capped peaks of the Picos de Europa visible on the southern horizon on clear days. The combination of consistent Atlantic swell, dramatic scenery, and low development creates an extraordinary surf environment.

The beach faces northwest into the Cantabrian Sea, receiving consistent surf throughout the year — best from late autumn through spring when Atlantic low-pressure systems generate long-period swell. In summer the waves are generally more manageable, making it suitable for beginner and intermediate surfers attending the local surf schools. Kitesurfing is also popular when the wind is up, and the broad beach and shallow entry make it safer for learners than many Atlantic beaches.

The protected nature park status means the beach retains its wild, undeveloped character — there are no seafront hotels or development behind it, just sand dunes, estuary wetlands, and the pinewoods of the Parque Natural. The nearby fishing town of San Vicente de la Barquera, with its dramatic medieval castle, provides excellent restaurants and accommodation just a few kilometres away.

Best surf from October to April. Summer waves (June–September) are generally 0.5–1.5m — good for beginners. Strong westerly or northwesterly swells produce 2–3m+ waves suitable for experienced surfers. The beach has a rip current on the eastern side; swim between the flags.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to surf at Oyambre?
For the best waves, autumn (October–November) and late winter (February–March) are ideal — consistent Atlantic low-pressure systems during these periods bring clean groundswell. For warmer conditions and better weather, July–September offers smaller but clean surf ideal for improving surfers, with air temperatures of 20–25°C.
Is Oyambre suitable for beginner surfers?
Yes — there are surf schools at the beach offering lessons for beginners. The broad beach and sandy bottom make it relatively safe. In summer the waves are generally manageable. However, beginners should always take a lesson first and swim within flagged areas; the beach has rip currents that can catch inexperienced swimmers.
What can you see from Playa de Oyambre?
On clear days the snow-capped peaks of the Picos de Europa mountains, rising to over 2600 metres, are visible to the south — a dramatic contrast with the Atlantic waves in front of you. The panorama of mountain-meets-ocean is one of the most spectacular views in Cantabria. San Vicente de la Barquera with its medieval castle is visible to the east.
