About Playa de Maspalomas

Maspalomas is one of Europe's most extraordinary beach landscapes — a kilometre-wide belt of shifting golden sand dunes, up to 10 metres high, that runs along the southern tip of Gran Canaria and merges with the Atlantic Ocean in a surreal desert-meets-sea panorama. The dune system is a protected Special Nature Reserve, meaning no construction is permitted within the dunes themselves, and the area has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

The beach is divided into two distinct zones. To the east, Playa del Inglés is the busy resort beach lined with beach bars, sun loungers, and water-sports operators — family-friendly and well-serviced. To the west, the beach narrows into the protected dune zone where development stops completely and the landscape becomes one of genuine solitude: just undulating ridges of fine golden sand and the sound of the Atlantic. Walking into the dunes for ten minutes puts you in a landscape that appears more Saharan than Spanish.

Gran Canaria's benign climate — averaging 24°C throughout the year — means Maspalomas is genuinely year-round. The constant gentle trade wind provides relief from the heat and has made the area famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing; major international competitions take place at nearby Pozo Izquierdo. The lighthouse at the southwestern tip of the island marks the end of the beach and is a popular photo stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big are the Maspalomas dunes?
The Maspalomas dune field covers an area of approximately 4 square kilometres. Individual dunes can reach heights of 10 metres. The dunes are a protected Special Nature Reserve (Reserva Natural Especial de las Dunas de Maspalomas) and walking through them is allowed on the existing paths.
What is the difference between Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés?
Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas are adjacent beaches at the south of Gran Canaria. Playa del Inglés is the main resort beach with numerous sun-loungers, bar services, and water sports — busier and more family-resort in character. The Maspalomas section encompasses the dune reserve — wider, wilder, and less serviced, with a naturist zone on the western end.
Is Maspalomas good year-round?
Excellent year-round. Gran Canaria's position close to the Tropic of Cancer gives it a sub-tropical climate — temperatures rarely drop below 18°C even in winter and sea temperatures stay around 20–22°C year-round. This makes it a popular winter sun destination, particularly for northern Europeans.
