About Playa de las Catedrales

Playa de las Catedrales — officially named As Catedrais in Galician — is one of Spain's most breathtaking natural landscapes. The Atlantic Ocean has carved the resistant slate and schist rock of this Lugo coastline into a series of arches, buttresses, caves, and pillars that resemble nothing so much as the nave of a Gothic cathedral. At low tide, several metres of beach are revealed beneath these natural stone vaults, allowing visitors to walk through a gallery of rock formations of extraordinary scale and beauty.

The beach is only accessible for two to three hours either side of low tide — the incoming Atlantic tide floods the cave passages rapidly and completely. Before visiting, it is essential to check the tide tables. In the summer months (July and August), access to the beach is managed by a free booking system administered by the Xunta de Galicia — slots must be reserved in advance online to limit visitor numbers and protect the fragile geology.

Outside the summer booking period, the beach can be visited freely at low tide without reservation. Autumn, spring, and winter visits have the advantage of fewer visitors and often more dramatic light — the green and grey Atlantic coast at these times of year has a wild, melancholic beauty that is deeply characteristic of Galicia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book in advance to visit Las Catedrales?
Yes — from June 15 to September 15, access to the beach requires a free timed slot booked in advance via the Xunta de Galicia website (playalascatedrales.xunta.gal). These slots are released a few weeks in advance and fill up quickly. Outside this period, no booking is required — just check tide tables and visit at low tide.
How long can you stay at the beach below the arches?
Only during the low-tide window — typically around 4 hours total centred on low tide. The tide floods in quickly, particularly toward the caves. Always check tide times, watch the water, and heed any warning instructions from staff. The clifftop path above is accessible at all times and provides different but equally impressive views.
What are the arches made of?
The rock formations are predominantly Galician schist and slate — ancient metamorphic rocks shaped over millennia by Atlantic wave erosion. The horizontal banding pattern, created by layers of differing rock hardness, gives the formations their characteristic colour striping and contributes to the cathedral-like appearance when viewed from below.
