La Malagueta is Málaga's urban beach — 1.2 kilometres of dark sand running east from the port, backed by a wide palm-lined promenade and a row of excellent chiringuito restaurants. It's one of the most accessible beaches in Andalusia, lying just 15 minutes' walk from Málaga's historic cathedral and the Picasso Museum in the city's compact centre.
Despite its city location, La Malagueta has consistently held the Blue Flag award for water quality and facilities. The beach holds its own as a genuine day-at-the-beach destination, with calm Mediterranean water, comprehensive lifeguard coverage in summer, and sun-lounger hire available throughout the beach. The chiringuitos here are considered among the best on the Costa del Sol for espetos — the traditional Málaga style of whole sardines grilled on wood fires at the water's edge.
The combination of beach and city culture is La Malagueta's greatest asset. You can swim in the morning, visit the Alcazaba historic fortress or the Pompidou Centre museum at midday, and return to the beach for a late afternoon chiringuito lunch — all without a car. This flexibility makes it particularly appealing for visitors staying in Málaga city.
La Malagueta is flat and fully accessible from the city. Ramps onto the beach are located at regular intervals. Adapted bathing facilities including beach wheelchairs and access mats are available from June to September at the main access point.
From Málaga city centre, walk east along the Paseo del Parque and continue past the port — the beach begins 15 minutes from the cathedral. City bus lines 11 and 34 stop at the beach. Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is 10km west by taxi or metro.
