About Cala Montgo

Cala Montgo is a dramatic coastal cove set among the striking volcanic and limestone cliffs of the northern Costa Brava, near the historic seaside town of L'Escala. The area takes its name from the Montgo headland — a distinctive rocky promontory that shapes this stretch of coast and lends the cove its characteristic wild, elemental character. The coastal landscape here feels ancient and almost otherworldly.

The water at Cala Montgo is among the clearest on the entire Costa Brava, owing to its rocky sea floor and distance from major urban infrastructure. Snorkellers and scuba divers are drawn to the extraordinary underwater topography — channels, caves, and overhangs shelter an array of Mediterranean species including moray eels, octopus, scorpion fish, and colourful nudibranchs. It is considered one of the best snorkelling spots in all of Catalonia.

The cove is relatively remote and requires a walk or short drive from L'Escala, which has preserved its natural state. There are no sunlounger rentals or vendors — just the rock, the sea, and utter clarity. This combination of natural splendour and solitude makes Cala Montgo a particular favourite among experienced Mediterranean travellers who have already seen the more accessible beaches and are searching for something genuinely special.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cala Montgo good for snorkelling?
Excellent. One of the best snorkelling spots on the Costa Brava. The rocky floor and exceptional water clarity reveal a rich underwater world. Bring mask, snorkel and fins.
What is L'Escala known for?
L'Escala is famous for its anchovies (anxoves), considered among the best in Europe, and for the nearby Empúries ruins — one of Spain's most important archaeological sites of Greek and Roman origin.
Is Cala Montgo suitable for families with young children?
The rocky entry and lack of facilities make it less ideal for very small children. Families with older children (8+) who are confident swimmers will enjoy it thoroughly, especially for snorkelling.
