Cala Montgo is a dramatic coastal cove set among the striking volcanic and limestone cliffs of the northern Costa Brava, near the historic seaside town of L'Escala. The area takes its name from the Montgo headland — a distinctive rocky promontory that shapes this stretch of coast and lends the cove its characteristic wild, elemental character. The coastal landscape here feels ancient and almost otherworldly.
The water at Cala Montgo is among the clearest on the entire Costa Brava, owing to its rocky sea floor and distance from major urban infrastructure. Snorkellers and scuba divers are drawn to the extraordinary underwater topography — channels, caves, and overhangs shelter an array of Mediterranean species including moray eels, octopus, scorpion fish, and colourful nudibranchs. It is considered one of the best snorkelling spots in all of Catalonia.
The cove is relatively remote and requires a walk or short drive from L'Escala, which has preserved its natural state. There are no sunlounger rentals or vendors — just the rock, the sea, and utter clarity. This combination of natural splendour and solitude makes Cala Montgo a particular favourite among experienced Mediterranean travellers who have already seen the more accessible beaches and are searching for something genuinely special.
The cove has an uneven rocky shoreline that requires care when entering the water. Robust footwear is recommended and the beach is not suitable for wheelchair users or very young children.
Drive from L'Escala (about 3 km), following signs to Cala Montgo. There is a small car park near the access trail. On foot, paths lead down from the cliff tops to the cove. Wear sturdy shoes.
