Cala Macarella is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Spain — a stunning south-coast cove where luminous turquoise water meets a crescent of white sand, all framed by tall limestone cliffs draped in fragrant pine and juniper forest.
Part of the protected Son Parc reserve, the beach has been spared from development. A single chiringuito (beach bar) serves cold drinks and simple food in the shade. The water is impossibly clear — you can see the sandy bottom in several metres of depth — and snorkeling around the flanking rocks reveals an extraordinary variety of fish and sea life.
Just a 10-minute walk along a coastal footpath through the pines brings you to the even smaller Cala Macarelleta, making it easy to visit both in one trip. The walk in from the car park takes approximately 20 minutes — the effort keeps the crowds somewhat manageable even in peak season.
The access path is unpaved and hilly — not suitable for wheelchairs. Part of the approach requires navigating pine forest trails. Soft sand beach once there.
Drive from Ciutadella (30 min) or Mahón (50 min) to the Son Saura car park. Paid parking in summer. The walk from the car park to the beach takes about 20 minutes.
