About Isle of Palms Beach

Isle of Palms is the polished, quieter counterpart to Folly Beach β€” a seven-mile barrier island that has long been the preferred beach retreat for Charleston's families. Reached via the IOP Connector bridge from Mount Pleasant, the island offers wide Atlantic beaches with notably cleaner water than the mainland shores, and a more subdued atmosphere compared to both Folly Beach and the major resort islands further south.

The Isle of Palms County Park at the island's western end provides the best organized beach experience β€” lifeguard towers, volleyball courts, beach chair and umbrella rentals, and clean restroom facilities. The natural vegetation of the island, including extensive sea oats and maritime forest, creates a visually striking backdrop to the white sand and blue water that is less manicured than many East Coast resort beaches.

The north jetty at the island's eastern tip is the best snorkeling spot along Charleston's coast β€” the rock structure creates habitat for fish and invertebrates, while the current flowing through the jetty improves water visibility. The island's Wild Dunes Resort area in the eastern portion contains gated communities with private beach access and golf courses, while the central and western sections remain more accessible to day visitors. Loggerhead sea turtles nest on the island's beaches each summer, making it an important conservation site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Isle of Palms Beach better than Folly Beach?
They serve different purposes β€” Isle of Palms is cleaner, quieter, and more family-oriented with better water clarity, while Folly Beach has more character, live music, and consistent surf. Families and those seeking a relaxed resort atmosphere prefer IOP; surfers and those wanting nightlife prefer Folly. Both are approximately the same distance from downtown Charleston.
Is there good snorkeling at Isle of Palms?
The north jetty at the eastern end is the best snorkeling spot β€” the granite rocks provide habitat and the current improves visibility. You'll see sheepshead, flounder, blue crab, and occasionally loggerhead sea turtles. The water clarity varies with tide and weather; incoming tides and calm conditions offer the clearest water. Equipment rentals are available on the island.
What's the parking situation at Isle of Palms?
Paid parking is available at IOP County Park and at numbered beach access points throughout the island. During summer weekends, lots fill quickly by 9–10 AM. A new parking meter system operates along Palm Boulevard. Arrive before 9 AM on summer weekends or consider biking from Mount Pleasant β€” a bike path connects the mainland to the island via the IOP Connector bridge path.
