Hilton Head Island is one of the Southeast's most sophisticated beach destinations β a 42-square-mile barrier island off South Carolina's Lowcountry coast where world-class resort development has been carefully integrated with extensive protected natural areas. The island's 12 miles of Atlantic beach are among the most beautiful on the East Coast, characterized by exceptionally wide tidal flats that extend hundreds of feet at low tide, firm enough for cycling and jogging directly on the sand.
The island is organized into a series of "plantations" β gated resort communities with their own beach access, golf courses, and tennis facilities. Sea Pines Plantation in the south houses the famous Harbour Town Golf Links and the iconic red-and-white striped Harbour Town Lighthouse. Coligny Beach Park is the main public beach area, with full facilities and direct access to the Atlantic. The Beachwalker Park at the island's southern tip offers a more natural, less developed experience.
What sets Hilton Head apart beyond the resort amenities is its remarkable natural environment. Resident pods of bottlenose dolphins frequently swim parallel to the beach, delighting beachgoers year-round. Shelling is exceptional, particularly in spring after storm events. The island sits within the ACE Basin, one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast, supporting extraordinary concentrations of migratory birds and marine life. Kayaking into the salt marshes at dawn remains one of the Southeast's finest wildlife experiences.
Coligny Beach Park has excellent accessibility with paved paths, accessible restrooms, and beach wheelchairs. The firm, wide tidal flats also make beach navigation easier for mobility-impaired visitors. Many resort accommodations offer accessible rooms with beach proximity.
Drive from Savannah/Hilton Head Airport (SAV) β approximately 45 minutes via US-278. The island is reached via the Hilton Head Expressway (US-278). No public transit serves the island; a car or bike rental is essential. Bikes are the preferred local transport β over 60 miles of dedicated paths.
