Folly Beach earns its nickname "The Edge of America" β a six-mile barrier island just 15 miles south of historic Charleston where the Lowcountry's creek-laced wilderness gives way to the open Atlantic Ocean. Unlike Hilton Head's polished resort culture, Folly is unashamedly laid-back, a place defined by surf shops, open-air bars, and the kind of beach town authenticity that has made it a beloved Charleston institution for generations.
The beach's most striking feature is the iconic Morris Island Lighthouse, which rises dramatically from the water just offshore β a 19th-century brick tower now surrounded by sea as the island that once supported it has entirely eroded away. The lighthouse provides a compelling backdrop for surfers and photographers alike. Folly's surf conditions are among the most consistent on the South Carolina coast, with the beach's exposure to open-ocean swells generating regular rideable waves that draw a committed local surfing community.
The Folly Beach County Park marks the island's western end with the best swimming areas, lifeguard coverage, and full facilities. The Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier extends 1,045 feet into the Atlantic and is one of South Carolina's most productive public piers. Center Street bisects the island and runs straight to the beach, lined with beach bars, restaurants, surf rentals, and the relaxed social scene that defines Folly's appeal. This is a beach where you come to have a good time, not just lie in the sand.
Folly Beach County Park provides good accessibility with paved paths, accessible restrooms, and beach wheelchair rentals available seasonally. The main access areas along Center Street have boardwalk ramps. Note that beach conditions and terrain vary; the central areas near County Park offer the most accessible access.
Drive from Charleston via Folly Road (SC-171) β approximately 20 minutes from downtown. Limited CARTA bus service operates to Folly Beach seasonally. Parking lots and street parking are available but fill quickly in summer; arrive early or use overflow lots near the bridge. Bikes are a popular alternative.
