About Umhlanga Beach

Umhlanga Beach (the name means "place of reeds" in Zulu) is the showpiece of KwaZulu-Natal's north coast — an immaculate stretch of golden sand backed by a gracious promenade, luxury hotels, and the much-loved red-and-white Umhlanga Lighthouse that has become an emblem of this upscale resort town. The Indian Ocean at Umhlanga is warm, blue, and inviting year-round, with water temperatures typically ranging from 22–26°C — a world apart from Cape Town's cold Atlantic. The beach is protected by shark nets maintained by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, making it one of South Africa's safest bathing beaches.

The promenade at Umhlanga is one of the finest in South Africa — a beautifully manicured path running above the beach, lined with gardens, restaurants, and the elegant curved frontage of the Beverly Hills and Oyster Box hotels whose gardens descend to the sand. The Oyster Box in particular, with its heritage architecture and beachside pool, is one of South Africa's most celebrated hotels. The boardwalk running from the lighthouse south toward Blue Lagoon is popular with early morning joggers and evening walkers who come to enjoy the warm sea breeze and views over the Indian Ocean.

The town of Umhlanga itself offers excellent dining, boutique shopping, and easy access to the Gateway Theatre of Shopping (one of the largest shopping malls in South Africa). Umhlanga sits 15 km north of central Durban — close enough to use Durban's facilities but retaining its own refined, resort-town character. King Shaka International Airport is only 20 minutes away, making it one of the most convenient beach destinations in South Africa to fly into directly. Despite its upscale reputation, access to the beach itself is completely free.

Visitor Information

Getting There

Umhlanga is 15 km north of Durban city centre — about 25 minutes by car via the N2 northbound or the M4 coastal road. King Shaka International Airport is just 20 minutes north on the N2. Abundant parking is available along Umhlanga Rocks Drive and in the town centre. Metered taxis and Uber operate from Durban's city centre. There is no direct train service but bus rapid transit (BRT) services connect to the north coast.

Best Time to Visit

Umhlanga is pleasant year-round thanks to KwaZulu-Natal's subtropical climate. Summer (October–April) brings the warmest water (25-27°C) and hottest days but also the most crowds and holiday pricing. Winter (May–September) is mild, less busy, and often gloriously sunny — perfect for walking the promenade. The busiest periods are school holidays (December–January, Easter) when the town reaches capacity. November and March are sweet spots for warm water with smaller crowds.

Tips

Swim only in the designated and lifeguard-supervised areas between the shark nets — this is important for your safety. The lighthouse at the northern end of the beach makes an excellent landmark and photo subject — best in morning light. For accommodation, staying at one of the beachfront hotels puts you steps from the sand. The Oyster Box hotel bar terrace is a perfect sunset spot even if you're not staying there. December through January accommodation must be booked many months in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Umhlanga Beach safe for swimming?
Yes — Umhlanga is one of KwaZulu-Natal's safest beaches for swimming. The beach is protected by shark nets maintained by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, and lifeguards supervise the designated swimming areas. Always swim within the flagged areas and between the designated net zones, and obey all lifeguard instructions. The gentle Indian Ocean surf makes it excellent for families with children. Water temperatures are warm year-round, making it a very comfortable swimming beach for all ages.
What is the Umhlanga Lighthouse?
The Umhlanga Lighthouse is an iconic red-and-white painted lighthouse standing at the northern end of Umhlanga Beach, built in 1954 and now a protected heritage site. It is the most photographed landmark on the KwaZulu-Natal coast and the symbol of Umhlanga. The lighthouse is visible from the beach and promenade, and creates a beautiful focal point for beach photography, especially at golden hour when the red and white stripes glow warmly. The lighthouse is not open to public access but makes a wonderful backdrop.
How far is Umhlanga from Durban and the airport?
Umhlanga is 15 km north of central Durban — about 20–30 minutes by car depending on traffic on the N2 or M4. King Shaka International Airport (DUR) is just 20 km further north of Umhlanga — about 20 minutes by car, making Umhlanga one of the most conveniently located beach resorts in South Africa for fly-in visitors. The M4 coastal route between Durban and Umhlanga passes through the scenic beachside suburb of Durban North and Ballito if travelling further north.
