About Golden Mile Beach

Durban's Golden Mile is one of Africa's great urban beach experiences — a continuous 6 km stretch of broad golden sand running the length of Durban's beachfront from South Beach in the south to Battery Beach in the north, backed by one of the continent's most vibrant promenades. The Indian Ocean laps the shore with warm, blue waves year-round, and the infrastructure supporting beach life here is extensive: lifeguards and shark nets protecting every official bathing area, surf schools operating on most sections, street food vendors, outdoor gyms, amusement parks, and the famous beachfront cycle and runner's path. This is where Durban lives and breathes its ocean identity.

Surfing is central to the Golden Mile's identity. Durban is South Africa's surf capital — the warm water, consistent south-to-north swell, and accessible beach breaks make it ideal year-round, and dozens of competitive surfers have learned their craft along this stretch. The annual Mr Price Pro (now Ballito Pro) and other events on the KwaZulu-Natal coast draw the world's best surfers, but the everyday lineup at places like New Pier and Bay of Plenty (the northern end near North Beach) is welcoming to surfers of all levels. Multiple surf schools on the Golden Mile offer lessons for beginners, and board hire is widely available.

The Golden Mile's promenade is a destination in itself — the Durban beachfront has been substantially upgraded and beautified in recent years, creating a world-class public space. uShaka Marine World, one of Africa's premier water and marine parks, anchors the southern end of the Golden Mile and is an excellent day out for families. The Moses Mabhida Stadium (venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-final) looms magnificently a few blocks inland of the northern beachfront and offers adventure activities including cable car rides and abseiling from the iconic arch. The Golden Mile is not just a beach — it's the living heart of one of Africa's most dynamic cities.

Visitor Information

Getting There

The Golden Mile runs along Marine Parade / Snell Parade in central Durban — easily accessible from anywhere in the city. Parking is available in rows of pay-and-display parks along the beachfront road. The Durban beachfront is well served by metered taxis and Uber, and within walking distance of several central hotels. King Shaka International Airport is 35 km north — about 40 minutes by car.

Best Time to Visit

The Golden Mile is busy year-round. Summer (October–April) has the hottest temperatures and best swimming, but school holiday periods (December–January, Easter) are extremely crowded. Autumn (March–May) offers excellent surf conditions with slightly smaller crowds. Durban's winters are mild and often gloriously sunny — surprisingly good for beach visits even though the air is cooler. The surf is best from May to August when pulsing south/southwest swells arrive.

Tips

Swim only within the designated shark-net areas flagged by lifeguards and marked with clear signage — safety is paramount. North Beach and Blue Lagoon are generally considered the cleanest and best-maintained sections. For surfing, New Pier offers a consistent beach break. Bring secure valuables management — the beachfront is busy and pickpocketing can occur in heavily crowded areas. The uShaka water park at the south end is excellent for children and worth a half-day visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Durban's Golden Mile?
The Golden Mile runs approximately 6 km from South Beach (adjacent to uShaka Marine World) in the south to Battery Beach in the north. The entire stretch is sandy and backed by the beachfront promenade and Marine/Snell Parade road. Each section has slightly different character — South Beach and Bay of Plenty are most popular with surf schools; North Beach is often considered the best maintained; Blue Lagoon at the northern end is calmer and good for families. All sections are connected by a continuous promenade cycling and running path.
Is the Golden Mile good for surfing?
Yes — the Golden Mile is South Africa's most accessible and well-established surf destination. The beach breaks along the beachfront work consistently throughout the year, with the best quality surf in autumn and winter (April–August) when south and southwest swells push up the coast. New Pier and Bay of Plenty are popular intermediate spots with consistent beach break. The warm water means no wetsuit is needed in summer. Multiple surf schools offer lessons for beginners along the beachfront. For experienced surfers, point breaks at New Pier and Dairy Beach offer more power.
What is uShaka Marine World?
uShaka Marine World is one of Africa's largest marine theme parks, located at the southern end of the Golden Mile on Point Waterfront. It contains an excellent aquarium (built around a replicated shipwreck), Wet 'n Wild water park with slides and pools, restaurants, and entertainment. It's a full-day family attraction and a highlight of any Durban beachfront visit, especially for families with children. The aquarium features sharks, rays, penguins, seals, and tropical fish. Tickets are sold at the entrance — booking online in advance for school holiday periods is recommended.
