Overview

Saidia is Morocco's easternmost Mediterranean resort, sitting virtually on the border with Algeria. Known as the "Blue Pearl" for the exceptional clarity and colour of its water, the beach extends for 14 kilometres โ€” one of the longest unbroken stretches of fine white sand in North Africa. The town transforms dramatically in summer: what is a quiet fishing port for most of the year becomes one of Morocco's busiest beach resorts in July and August, when domestic tourists and the diaspora community flock to its Mediterranean shores. A Club Med resort and several large hotel developments have grown up in recent years, yet Saidia retains an authentic Moroccan character away from the resort strip.

๐Ÿš— Getting There

From Oujda (60km): good road connection. From Nador (90km) via Berkane. The nearest airport is Oujda-Angads (OUD) with connections to Casablanca and Europe. Buses from Oujda and Berkane run regularly in summer.

๐Ÿ“… Best Time

Julyโ€“August for the full resort experience โ€” the town comes alive with Moroccan summer visitors. June and September are calmer, with very pleasant swimming conditions (sea temperature 24โ€“27ยฐC in summer). Avoid if possible the peak weeks of mid-July to mid-August when accommodation books out months ahead.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Book accommodation well ahead for summer. Walk the full length of the beach at sunrise or sunset for a remarkable sense of its scale. The medina of Berkane (25km) is worth a half-day visit. The fig gardens around Berkane are also famous โ€” in season the fruit is extraordinary.
