About Misquamicut State Beach

Misquamicut State Beach is Rhode Island's western, wilder ocean beach β€” a long Atlantic sand strand stretching southwest from the Watch Hill peninsula near Connecticut, administered by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer to one of New England's most spirited and social beach scenes. The beach's name comes from the Niantic/Pequot word for the area, referencing the region's Native American heritage predating European settlement.

The beach community of Misquamicut centers on Atlantic Avenue, a strip of family motels, seafood stands, miniature golf, go-kart tracks, and amusement rides that gives the area a retro, unpretentious summer resort character very different from the quieter, upscale atmosphere of nearby Watch Hill or Narragansett. The Atlantic Beach Club, operating continuously since 1917, is the social hub of Misquamicut β€” a classic beach club with an outdoor deck, music, and dancing on summer evenings that has been part of the Rhode Island shore experience for generations of New England families.

The surf at Misquamicut is gentler than at Narragansett (facing southwest rather than southeast), making it particularly well suited for families with children. Watch Hill, just 3 km to the east, provides an elegant contrast β€” an exclusive Victorian resort village with the famous Flying Horse Carousel (listed as the oldest carousel in America, operating since 1876) and beautiful rocky beaches overlooking the entrance to Little Narragansett Bay. Taylor Swift's estate at Watch Hill has made the area famous nationally, though the beaches there remain accessible to the public.

Visitor Information

Facilities

Misquamicut State Beach charges parking fees (daily rates, higher on weekends) rather than individual beach badges. Facilities include a bathhouse with showers and restrooms, a concession pavilion, and designated lifeguard zones. Multiple private food establishments operate along Atlantic Avenue at the rear of the beach. Beach wheelchairs are available for rent. Seasonal DEM permits are available for frequent visitors. The beach park opens Memorial Day weekend.

Safety

Lifeguards are on duty from late June through Labor Day. The beach has an open Atlantic ocean fetch and can experience strong longshore currents and rip currents, particularly during and after tropical weather events. Swim between the flags and follow all lifeguard instructions. The shallow sandbar near the shoreline can give way suddenly to deeper water. Alcohol is not permitted on the state beach section. Pets are prohibited during the swimming season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Misquamicut and Watch Hill?
Misquamicut is the broad state beach and Atlantic Avenue resort strip β€” active, family-friendly, and affordable, with amusements, food stands, and a lively scene. Watch Hill (3 km east on a rocky headland) is an exclusive Victorian resort village known for its yacht club, elegant summer cottages, boutiques, and the Flying Horse Carousel. They offer very different experiences within walking distance of each other.
What are parking and entry fees at Misquamicut State Beach?
Misquamicut State Beach charges parking fees β€” around $20–30 on weekdays and $30–40 on summer weekends (fees subject to annual adjustment by Rhode Island DEM). There is no separate beach admission ticket; parking is the gate. The primary lot on Atlantic Avenue fills by late morning on peak summer weekends. Rhode Island residents receive discounted parking rates. Annual State Beach Passes offer cost savings for frequent visitors.
