Praia de Carcavelos is the most popular beach near Lisbon and arguably the best urban beach in Europe. Just 20 minutes by train from the capital, this long stretch of golden sand draws surfers, families, students, and beachgoers year-round. The beach has excellent surf conditions — powerful enough for intermediate and advanced surfers, with multiple surf schools for beginners.
The eastern end is more sheltered and family-friendly. A seafront promenade links restaurants and bars, and the 16th-century Fort of São Julião da Barra stands guard at the eastern end. In summer, Carcavelos buzzes with an energetic Portuguese beach culture that's utterly infectious.
Excellent access from the flat promenade and car park. Beach wheelchair available from lifeguard station.
Take the Cascais train line from Lisbon's Cais do Sodré station to Carcavelos station — 20 minutes, then a 10-minute walk to the beach.
