Praia da Rocha is the Algarve's original resort beach and still one of its most impressive — a massive expanse of golden sand stretching for 1.5 kilometres beneath dramatic golden-brown rock formations. The beach is wide enough to accommodate thousands of visitors while still feeling spacious, and the rock formations at the eastern end create sheltered coves for more intimate sunbathing. A long pedestrian promenade runs along the cliff top with restaurants, bars, and stunning ocean views.
Portimão's fort, the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, stands at the eastern headland overlooking the river mouth. The western end is less developed and quieter. Combined with excellent swimming conditions and a full range of water sports, Praia da Rocha is the Algarve's most complete beach destination.
Good accessibility with ramp access from the cliff-top promenade. The beach is wide and flat. Multiple access points along the length.
Located south of Portimão city. Well-signed from the EN125. Regular buses from Portimão. Multi-storey car park available.
