About Punta Sal Beach

Punta Sal is one of Peru's most beautiful and secluded beach destinations — a sheltered crescent bay framed by rocky headlands about 30 km north of Mancora in the far north of the country. The bay's protected position means the water is exceptionally calm and clear, with visibility reaching 10–15 metres on good days, making it by far the best snorkeling beach in Peru.

The warm equatorial waters here support coral formations and diverse marine life — sea stars, colourful reef fish, rays, and occasional sea turtles frequent the rocky outcrops at each end of the bay. Snorkeling equipment is available for hire from the resort hotels that line the beach, and guides can take you to the best spots around the headlands.

The beach itself is pristine and white, with a few small luxury resorts providing sunloungers, beach bars, and fresh seafood restaurants. Despite the resorts, Punta Sal maintains a quietly exclusive feel — far less frantic than Mancora, it attracts a more relaxed crowd seeking respite from Peru's city life. A perfect counterpart to Mancora's buzz.

Visitor Information

Getting There

30 km north of Mancora via the Pan-American Highway. Taxi from Mancora takes 30–40 minutes. Mototaxis available but uncomfortable on the highway. Some resorts offer shuttle services from Mancora.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round, but snorkeling visibility is best October–April when the water is warmest and calmer. Avoid the main beach during El Niño years when sea temperatures spike and jellyfish proliferate.

Tips

Snorkel along the rocky edges of the bay for the best marine life. Apply reef-safe sunscreen only. The calm water makes this excellent for non-swimmers too — snorkeling in the shallows near shore is ideal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What marine life can I see snorkeling here?
Expect colourful reef fish, sea stars, moray eels, rays, and if you're lucky, sea turtles. The rocky outcrops at the bay's edges are the richest spots. Visibility is typically 8–15 metres.
Do I need to stay at a resort to access the beach?
The beach is technically public, but most facilities (chairs, snorkel gear) are operated by resort hotels. Non-guests can access the open beach area. Snorkel gear rental is available from independent vendors near the bay entrance.
Is Punta Sal good for children?
Excellent — the calm, shallow bay is ideal for children. The gentle entry and warm water make it one of the safest and most enjoyable beaches for families in northern Peru.
