Mancora is Peru's premier beach resort — a small but lively town straddling the Pan-American Highway in the far north, near the Ecuadorian border. Unlike the grey-skied beaches of Lima, Mancora sits above the reach of the Humboldt Current's cold water influence, offering warm Pacific waters (22–28°C), golden sand, and over 300 sunny days a year. The result is the closest thing to a tropical beach experience Peru has to offer.
The main beach runs along the town's western edge — a long, sandy crescent packed with thatched-roof beach bars, surf schools, and colourful fishing boats. The surf is consistent year-round, with long right-hand waves rolling in from the north. March and April bring the biggest swells when the sea is warmest, attracting surfers from across South America. The beach is also popular with families during Peru's long summer holiday (December–March).
Beyond the waves, Mancora offers an excellent selection of seafood restaurants, boutique hotels, and a relaxed backpacker scene. The party atmosphere ramps up on weekends when Peruvian city-dwellers escape for coastal breaks. For a quieter experience, the nearby beaches of Vichayito and Punta Sal are just 30 minutes away by taxi.
Fly to Piura or Tumbes, then bus/taxi (2–3 hours). Direct overnight buses from Lima (14–16 hours). The town is right on the Pan-American Highway — easy to reach by car.
December–April for warmest water and biggest swells. June–November is drier and less crowded — excellent for surf and relaxation without the holiday rush.
Book accommodation ahead for the January–March peak. Watch for jellyfish in warmer months. ATMs can run dry on holiday weekends — bring cash. Try the local ceviche — outstanding fresh fish.
