Seaside is the oldest and most traditional beach resort on the Oregon Coast β a wide, flat, sandy beach stretching more than two miles, backed by the famous "Prom," a 1.5-mile oceanfront promenade that has been the social heart of the town since 1921. The beach is the most popular in Oregon for families with its accessible, open character, lifeguards in summer, and a lively beachfront atmosphere that echoes classic American seaside resorts of the early 20th century.
The town itself has a boardwalk resort feel β carousels, arcades, saltwater taffy, bumper cars, and kite shops line the approach to the Prom from downtown. The Beach turnaround at the foot of Broadway is the historic end of the Lewis and Clark Trail, where the Corps of Discovery made salt from seawater in the winter of 1805β06; a replica saltworks cairn is located a short walk south. The Seaside Aquarium on the Prom is one of Oregon's oldest aquariums and features interactive harbor seal feeding.
Bodysurfing and boogie boarding are more practical here than full surfing, though surfers do use the beach at both ends. The Seaside surf break south of town at "The Cove" is one of the more consistent surf spots on the North Oregon Coast, sheltered by the Tillamook Head headland. Hang gliders and paragliders occasionally launch from the headland. The wide, flat beach is perfect for kite flying, sand castle building, and simply strolling the Prom at low tide as the lights of the town reflect on the wet sand.
Lifeguards patrol the main beach section each summer. Restrooms are located at multiple points along the Prom. Ample paid parking is available downtown and at the beach turnaround area. The adjacent Seaside Aquarium and Convention Center are landmark amenities. Bike rentals and beach gear shops are plentiful throughout downtown.
Sneaker waves are a hazard on all Oregon beaches, including Seaside. Always face the ocean and keep young children well back from the surf. The central beach section has lifeguards in July and August; the northern and southern ends are unpatrolled. Water temperatures average 55β62Β°F (13β17Β°C) year-round β very cold by most standards.
Seaside is 75 miles (120 km) west of Portland via US-26 to US-101 North. The Sunset Empire Transportation District (SETD) operates a scheduled bus service from Astoria and north Oregon Coast communities. A summer beach trolley connects the town's key points. Amtrak's Cascades train serves Portland, from where car rental or bus connections are available.
