Carolina Beach is Wilmington's original beach getaway — a 2-mile beach town perched at the tip of Federal Point where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The boardwalk runs along the oceanfront through the central part of town, lined with restaurants, shops, and seasonal amusements. The beach itself is wide and gently sloping with warm summer water perfect for families — lifeguards patrol in season, and the central beach area provides the full infrastructure for a classic family beach day.
The extraordinary surprise of Carolina Beach is the adjacent Carolina Beach State Park — home to wild populations of the Venus flytrap, a plant native only to a small area within a 60-mile radius of Wilmington. The park's carnivorous plant ecosystem, ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and quiet natural trails provide a striking natural counterpoint to the boardwalk's energy. The combination of classic seaside fun and genuine natural wonder makes Carolina Beach one of North Carolina's most unexpectedly complete beach destinations.
Carolina Beach has multiple accessible boardwalk access ramps and accessible restroom facilities. Beach wheelchairs are available seasonally. The boardwalk itself is paved and fully accessible. The wide, flat beach is easily navigable at low tide. Carolina Beach State Park has accessible trail sections near the marina and visitor center.
Located 15 miles south of Wilmington via US-421 South (Snow's Cut Road). From Wilmington International Airport, approximately 25 minutes. The Cape Fear Public Transit Authority runs bus service to Carolina Beach seasonally. Paid parking is available at the main boardwalk area and at numerous public beach access points. A public marina also provides water access.
