Best Snorkeling Beaches in New York
New York's Atlantic beaches are not typically renowned for tropical snorkeling, but Jones Beach and Main Beach East Hampton offer the clearest Atlantic water conditions and rocky underwater formations worth exploring in late summer.
Jones Beach
The rocky groins and jetties at Jones Beach attract marine life including mussels, crabs, small fish, and seasonal sea turtles that pass through Long Island Sound. In late August and September when water clarity is at its best (2β3 m), snorkeling near the groin structures at the west end can be rewarding.
Main Beach East Hampton
The clearest water on Long Island's South Shore β Main Beach benefits from relatively sparse surrounding development and the natural flushing of the Atlantic. In late summer, snorkelers report flatfish, juvenile bluefish, sand dollars, and occasional cownose rays passing through the nearshore area.
Note: New York beaches are not tropical snorkeling destinations. For world-class snorkeling, consider Hawaii or the Florida Keys. New York's snorkeling is best described as Atlantic shore exploration β rewarding for naturalists, but not comparable to coral reef destinations. Always check water quality advisories before entering the water.
