Wildwood has the widest naturally occurring beach on the New Jersey Shore — in some areas up to 1,000 feet from the boardwalk to the water's edge. This extraordinary width is the result of ongoing northward sand migration that has deposited sand against the southern end of the island for decades. Combined with the free beach access (no badge required, unique among South Jersey resorts), Wildwood's beach accommodates extraordinary summer crowds while still feeling spacious.
The 38-block Wildwood boardwalk is the Jersey Shore's most raucous and entertaining — five amusement piers (Morey's Piers operation dominates, featuring roller coasters, water parks, and thrill rides), dozens of food stalls serving the legendary Wildwood classic "original" cheesesteak, funnel cakes, and pizza, and a nightlife strip that earned Wildwood the unofficial title of "Jersey Shore's vacation capital." The American Bandstand of rock 'n' roll history was essentially written here: Chubby Checker introduced the Twist to American audiences in Wildwood in 1960.
The Doo-Wop Preservation League has curated Wildwood's extraordinary collection of mid-century modern motel architecture — Space Age, Googie, and outrageous Doo-Wop motels from the 1950s–1970s with boomerang rooflines, kidney-shaped pools, and neon signs that represent one of America's largest and most intact examples of this unique architectural style. A drive down Atlantic Avenue is equal parts architectural curiosity and nostalgic time travel.
The boardwalk is paved and accessible. Beach wheelchairs are available. The very wide beach means longer walks over sand to reach the water — this may be challenging for some mobility-impaired visitors. Morey's Piers has accessible ride options. Numerous accessible lodging options exist throughout the Wildwoods resort area. The flat terrain of the barrier island is generally favorable for wheelchair users reaching the beach area.
From Philadelphia, Atlantic City Expressway connects to the Garden State Parkway south to Exit 4A — approximately 2 hours. From NYC, Garden State Parkway south — approximately 3 hours. Limited NJ Transit bus service. Ample parking along Rio Grande Avenue and in municipal lots, though peak summer weekends fill quickly. Renting a beach bike for getting around the island is highly recommended.
