About Atlantic City Beach

Atlantic City invented the American beach vacation. In the late 1800s, the city pioneered the concept of mass seaside tourism, building the world's first Boardwalk in 1870 specifically to keep sand out of hotel lobbies β€” a solution so efficient and pleasurable that the Boardwalk became an essential feature of the resort. The iconic 5.5-mile Boardwalk, with its rolling chairs, salt water taffy shops, and the glittering backdrop of casino hotels, remains one of the most distinctive urban beach experiences anywhere in the world.

The beach itself is remarkably wide β€” up to 300 feet from dune to water line in some sections β€” and entirely free to access, a notable contrast to much of the rest of the New Jersey Shore where beach tags are mandatory. The sand is clean and fine; the Atlantic here is swimmable all summer. Lifeguards cover designated swimming zones during peak season. Steel Pier, extending 700 feet over the ocean and hosting carnival rides since 1898, is the most famous Boardwalk attraction and remains operational today.

Beyond the casino and entertainment gloss, Atlantic City has a raw, authentic character all its own. The city has a deep African American cultural history, complex urban neighborhoods just a block from the Boardwalk, and a culinary scene that runs from Michelin-starred casino dining rooms to legendary local soul food. For travelers who want beach plus urban edge, cultural depth, and non-stop entertainment, Atlantic City delivers an experience that quieter Shore towns simply cannot match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Atlantic City beach really free?
Yes β€” Atlantic City is one of the few municipalities on the New Jersey Shore where all public beaches are completely free to access with no badge fee required. This is because Atlantic City historically chose casino tax revenue over beach badge income. All 4 miles of city beach from Absecon Inlet to Ventnor are free to use year-round.
Is it safe to swim at Atlantic City Beach?
Yes β€” lifeguards patrol designated swimming zones from mid-June through Labor Day, and the water quality has significantly improved since 1980s-era pollution. Rip currents can occur β€” always swim in guarded areas and obey flag warnings. The water reaches comfortable swimming temperatures (70–78Β°F) from late June through early September.
Is Atlantic City safe to visit?
The Boardwalk and casino areas are generally safe and heavily patrolled. The beach itself is safe during daylight hours with lifeguards on duty. As with any urban environment, stay aware of your surroundings when walking away from the casino and Boardwalk corridors. The casino hotels provide very secure environments. The resort district gets significantly safer each year with ongoing revitalization investment. Stick to the Boardwalk and resort areas and you'll have a great experience.
