About Hampton Beach

Hampton Beach is the centerpiece of New Hampshire's 18-mile Atlantic seacoast β€” a broad 3-mile crescent of golden sand lined by a classic New England boardwalk, seasonal dining, entertainment venues, and one of the densest concentrations of summer resort activity in the region. Despite New Hampshire's brief shoreline, Hampton Beach punches well above its weight in reputation, drawing an estimated 150,000 visitors on peak summer weekends and ranking among the most attended beaches in all of New England.

The Hampton Beach boardwalk runs parallel to Ocean Boulevard β€” a strip of arcades, ice cream stands, seafood restaurants, souvenir shops, and nightlife venues that defines the resort character in summer. The Hampton Beach State Park section at the center of the beach is the publicly managed heart of the resort, with the Casino Ballroom β€” a historic 1920s concert venue that has hosted everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to the Rolling Stones β€” standing as the cultural centerpiece. Free Saturday night summer concerts in the Hampton Beach Seashell Amphitheater draw large crowds, and the Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Classic each June produces astonishing large-scale sand artworks along the beachfront.

New Hampshire's seacoast has some of the warmest Atlantic ocean temperatures in New England, with peak July and August water temperatures reaching 68–70Β°F β€” warmer than Maine beaches to the north and comparable to Cape Cod in the peak weeks of summer. This relative warmth, combined with the energetic boardwalk scene and easy highway access from Boston and Manchester, makes Hampton Beach the most accessible and lively traditional beach resort in the region.

Visitor Information

Facilities

Hampton Beach State Park has paid parking lots (meters along Ocean Blvd and a large state lot), public restrooms, outdoor showers, and snack stands. The Casino Ballroom hosts concerts throughout the summer. Lifeguards are on duty at Hampton Beach State Park section daily in summer. Restaurants, arcades, and shops front the entire boardwalk. Outdoor events include Friday night fireworks throughout July and August.

Safety

Hampton Beach is generally safe for swimming, with moderate surf, a gradual beach gradient, and summer lifeguards at the state park section. Rip currents can occur β€” always swim near lifeguard stations. The beach becomes extremely crowded on peak summer weekends; parking can take 30–45 minutes. Arrive early or use the Hampton Shuttle from NH commuter rail stops. Ocean Boulevard traffic is heavy all summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hampton Beach worth the trip from Boston?
Absolutely. Hampton Beach is one of the best traditional boardwalk beach experiences within a day trip of Boston, with warmer water than many Cape Cod beaches in peak summer and a more energetic, carnival-style atmosphere. The 1-hour drive on I-95 is straightforward, and the combination of beach swimming, boardwalk entertainment, and fresh New England seafood makes it a complete summer day. Weekdays are much more manageable than summer weekends for parking.
When is the Hampton Beach Sand Sculpting Competition?
The Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Classic is typically held in June (exact dates vary). Professional sand sculptors from across the country compete to create elaborate large-scale sculptures directly on the beach, which remain on display for several weeks afterward. The event is free to watch and is one of the most popular non-summer beach events in New Hampshire. Check the Hampton Beach website for the current year's schedule.
Does New Hampshire have a lot of beach?
New Hampshire has only 18 miles of Atlantic coastline β€” the shortest of any coastal US state. Despite this, the NH seacoast is extremely well-developed and heavily used, with Hampton Beach being the dominant resort area. Seabrook Beach, North Hampton Beach, and Rye Beach are quieter alternatives nearby. The small seacoast's proximity to Boston and Manchester ensures enormous summer demand for its limited sandy shoreline.
