Overview

Nador is a working port city in Morocco's northeast, but it hides a remarkable coastal asset: Marchica Lagoon — a 25-square kilometre protected lagoon separated from the Mediterranean by a long sandy barrier. Since the establishment of the Marchica Méd development authority in 2010, the lagoon has been carefully developed into a sustainable eco-tourism destination with beach resort infrastructure, flamingo observation points, and clean lagoon swimming. Nearby Charrana Beach faces the open Mediterranean with classic beach facilities popular with Nadoris and visitors from the Spanish enclave of Melilla (just 13km away).

✈️ Getting There

Nador Airport (NDR) has flights from Europe (Air Arabia Maroc, Ryanair) and Casablanca. From Oujda: 2 hours by road or train. The Spanish enclave of Melilla (13km) has a ferry to Almeria, Spain; the border crossing is a major transit point.

📅 Best Time

June–September for swimming and beach weather — the Mediterranean coast has hot summers and warm seas. July–August sees the Moroccan diaspora return, bringing life to the beaches and town. Flamingos in the lagoon are best observed October–March. Spring and autumn are pleasant for sightseeing.

💡 Tips

Take a guided tour of Marchica Lagoon to learn about flamingo conservation and the wetland ecology. The lagoon road makes for a beautiful sunset drive. Nador's Thursday market is one of the region's best. Day trip to Melilla through the border crossing is an easy and fascinating way to step into Spain without flying.
