About Saidia Beach

Saidia Beach is Morocco's longest Mediterranean beach — a continuous 14-kilometre arc of fine white sand running westward from the Algerian border along the northeastern coast of Morocco. Nicknamed "La Perle Bleue" (the Blue Pearl) for the extraordinary clarity and deep blue colour of the water here, Saidia ranks as one of the premier family beach destinations in North Africa. The Mediterranean in this corner of Morocco is sheltered from Atlantic swell, resulting in gentle waves, warm summer water (typically 24-26°C by August) and conditions that are ideal for children.

The town of Saidia was transformed by the Moroccan government's "Saidia Med" project, a massive tourism development launched in the mid-2000s. The project created a large marina, several five-star hotel complexes, luxury apartments, golf courses and a properly organised seafront with beach access, promenades and services. This infrastructure means Saidia offers a standard of beach resort amenities unusual anywhere on the Moroccan coast — sun lounger rental, beach clubs, supervised swimming areas, water sports hire, and a full range of restaurants and cafés along the front. The development has been subject to various delays and periods of incomplete construction, but has increasingly matured into a functioning resort town.

Despite the resort infrastructure, much of Saidia's 14km beach remains undeveloped — particularly the eastern sections near the border. Walking east along the sand, the resort hotels gradually give way to empty, pristine Mediterranean beach backed by eucalyptus trees, with no facilities but spectacular solitude and stunning water clarity. The distance between Morocco and Algeria is just metres at the Oued Kiss river mouth, giving the eastern beach an end-of-the-world quality unique in Moroccan coastal travel. For families, couples or solo travellers, Saidia offers maximum flexibility: resort luxury at one end, wild empty beach at the other, all connected by the same beautiful 14km arc of sand.

Visitor Information

🚗 Getting There

The nearest major airport is Oujda-Angads (60km southwest), with regular domestic flights from Casablanca and some European connections. By car via the A2/N2 from Oujda takes about 1 hour. CTM buses run from Oujda. Saidia is 4-5 hours by road from Fez or Meknes.

📅 Best Time to Visit

July–August peak season brings maximum energy and warmest water, but also the largest crowds (mostly Moroccan families). June and September are excellent alternatives with warm water and fewer visitors. Outside summer the town quietens dramatically and many resort facilities close.

💡 Visitor Tips

Walk east along the beach for 3-4km beyond the resort zone to find completely empty sections. For the best view of the water colour, visit in the morning before afternoon haze develops. The marina area has some of the best seafood restaurants in northeastern Morocco.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the water at Saidia so blue and clear?

Saidia sits at the extreme eastern end of the Moroccan Mediterranean coast, close to the Algerian border, where the sea is furthest from the turbid Atlantic waters. The Mediterranean here is deep blue, almost entirely clear, and relatively low in nutrients — giving it exceptional visibility and that vivid cobalt colour that earned the beach its "Blue Pearl" nickname. Water clarity of 10-15 metres is common in summer.

Is there a Moroccan/Algerian border crossing at Saidia?

The Morocco-Algeria land border has been officially closed since 1994 and remains closed. Saidia beach ends at the Oued Kiss river mouth which marks the border — you can walk to within sight of Algeria, but there is no crossing. This gives the eastern beach section a strangely frontier quality that many visitors find fascinating.

How does Saidia compare to Agadir or Essaouira?

Saidia offers distinctly Mediterranean conditions (calmer, warmer, clearer summer water) versus the Atlantic beaches at Agadir and Essaouira (cooler, more powerful waves, better for surfing). Saidia is a purpose-built resort environment while Agadir and Essaouira have older urban characters. For families wanting maximum swimming comfort, Saidia's Mediterranean water is superior.
