Quemado Beach is the main town beach of Al Hoceima, one of Morocco's most spectacularly positioned cities — a Mediterranean port city perched on a bay where the last peaks of the Rif Mountain range plunge directly into the sea. The result is one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in the entire Maghreb: towering ochre and terracotta cliffs, intensely blue Mediterranean water, and a crescent of golden sand at the base of the mountain walls. Quemado sits inside this natural amphitheatre, protected from Atlantic swell by the surrounding headlands and delivering warm, incredibly clear Mediterranean water throughout the summer.
The water quality at Quemado is exceptional — the combination of Rif Mountain freshwater inputs and Mediterranean clarity creates conditions that regularly rank among the clearest beach waters in Morocco. Snorkelling around the rocky edges of the bay reveals a rich underwater environment, with sea grass beds, colourful fish and (with luck) octopus visible in the shallows. The beach itself is well-organised in season, with sun loungers, beach vendors, and simple restaurants on the promenade above. Al Hoceima National Park, which protects the wider coastline including several wild offshore islands, begins just east of the town.
Al Hoceima is significantly less visited than Morocco's Atlantic or northern Mediterranean resorts — the city's relative isolation (it was only connected to the rest of Morocco by road in the 1980s) means it retains an authentic Rifian character, with Amazigh-speaking locals, a tight-knit fishing community and a medina that hasn't been overly commercialised for tourism. For travellers who want world-class Mediterranean scenery and beach quality without the mass-tourism crowds, Quemado and Al Hoceima represent one of the best-kept secrets on the North African coast.
Al Hoceima has a regional airport with flights from Casablanca and European cities. By bus: CTM and Supratours operate from Fez (4 hrs), Tetouan (3 hrs) and Casablanca (8 hrs). Quemado Beach is a 10-minute walk from the city centre.
June to September for the warmest Mediterranean water and guaranteed sunshine. July and August are warmest but busiest. May and October offer pleasant temperatures with fewer crowds. The Rif Mountain backdrop is particularly scenic in spring when green.
Visit Al Hoceima National Park for wild coastal hikes and offshore island views. The Plage Isly, Torres and Quemado beaches all offer different experiences within walking distance. Fresh seafood in the harbour area is excellent and very affordable.
Yes — Quemado is one of the safest and most family-friendly beaches in Morocco. The bay is sheltered, the water is calm and clear, the beach is sandy, and there are full facilities including sun loungers and restaurants. It's considered one of the best family beaches on Morocco's Mediterranean coast.
Al Hoceima is considerably more dramatic scenically than Tetouan or Nador — the Rif Mountain setting is unique. The water is also exceptionally clear. The trade-off is relative remoteness and fewer tourist amenities, but for scenery and natural beach quality, Quemado surpasses most Moroccan Mediterranean beaches.
The Peñón de Alhucemas is a small Spanish-administered island just 300 metres offshore from Al Hoceima with a fortress on it — one of Spain's last Mediterrean plazas de soberanía in Morocco. It's clearly visible from Quemado Beach and gives the bay an unusually exotic geopolitical character.
