About Playa Blanca Beach

Playa Blanca is a popular family resort beach located in the Malabata zone on the eastern arc of Tangier's great bay, sheltered from the Atlantic winds that buffet the city's western and northern shores by the bay's curved geography. This sheltered position on the Mediterranean side of the bay produces dramatically calmer, warmer waters than the Atlantic beaches to the west — making Playa Blanca the preferred choice for families with young children, casual swimmers, and resort beach holidaymakers seeking predictable, comfortable conditions. The beach itself curves gently along the inner bay, with fine yellowish sand, very shallow entry, and typically flat or gently rippled water in summer months.

The Malabata zone behind the beach has developed significantly in recent decades into a full resort strip, with a concentration of mid-range to upscale hotels, apartment complexes, restaurants serving both Moroccan and international cuisine, beach clubs, and water sports operators. Jet skiing, pedalo hire, kayaking, parasailing, and banana boat rides are all available during the summer season, making Playa Blanca the most activity-rich beach environment in the Tangier area. The promenade behind the beach is pleasant to walk in the evening, with cafes and restaurants filling up from late afternoon with both Moroccan families and international tourists staying in the zone's hotels.

Tangier's legendary historic medina is just 6km to the west, making Playa Blanca an excellent base for combining genuine beach holiday comfort with cultural exploration. The medina's narrow souks, the Kasbah Museum with its stunning sea-view terrace, the Terrasse des Paresseux (Lazy Man's Terrace) with its panorama over the Strait, and the historic American Legation (the first US diplomatic property outside American territory) are all accessible by taxi in under 15 minutes. For visitors who want the full Moroccan experience without sacrificing familiar beach resort comforts, the Malabata area offers a satisfying compromise.

Visitor Information

Getting There

Playa Blanca and the Malabata zone are located approximately 6km east of Tangier's medina, easily reached by petit-taxi (10 minutes) from the city center. Many hotels in the Malabata zone offer their own beach access. Tangier Ville train station and the ferry terminal are both within taxi distance (15–20 minutes). Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport is approximately 20km west; the airport taxi fare to Malabata is fixed and manageable. The coastal promenade road running east from Tangier's main beach connects directly to the Malabata strip.

Best Time to Visit

July and August are peak season when sea temperatures reach 22–25°C — ideal for families and casual swimmers. This is also the busiest and most expensive period for hotels. Late June and September offer excellent conditions with noticeably fewer crowds and lower accommodation prices. May is pleasant for exploring the area though the sea can still be cool for swimming (18–20°C). The off-season (October–April) is quiet — most beach facilities close — but the area's hotels remain operating and Tangier's cultural attractions are freely accessible.

Tips

Book hotels in the Malabata zone well in advance for July and August, particularly for family rooms, as demand from Moroccan and European families is high. The beach itself is free to access — loungers and umbrellas are available through the beach clubs or hotel facilities. Bargaining is normal for water sports and activities. The Malabata zone's restaurants offer good value seafood, particularly grilled fish and prawns, at much lower prices than equivalent Mediterranean resort destinations. Tangier's famous Café Hafa, a terraced clifftop tea house that has served customers since 1921, is just 8km away and worth the detour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Playa Blanca different from Tangier's central beach?
Tangier's central beach (Plage Corniche) runs right through the city alongside the urban promenade, offering very easy access to the medina and city attractions, but with noisier, busier, and slightly less clean conditions than the Malabata zone. Playa Blanca, by contrast, benefits from being on the inner Mediterranean-influenced side of the bay, producing calmer, warmer, and cleaner water conditions. It also has more resort infrastructure in the immediately adjacent hotel strip. The tradeoff is that it is 6km from the medina city center — a short taxi ride away. For families prioritizing beach quality and calm water, Playa Blanca is the superior choice. For visitors who want maximum cultural convenience and the lively city atmosphere, the central beach is better positioned.
What water sports are available at Playa Blanca?
During the main summer season (June–September), a good range of water sports and beach activities is available from the beach and hotel operators along the Malabata strip. Jet ski hire and guided tours are the most popular motorized activity. Pedalo and kayak hire allows quieter, self-paced exploration of the bay. Banana boat and inflatable tube rides are popular with families and groups. Parasailing is offered by some operators from the beach, providing aerial views over the bay and city. Stand-up paddleboarding has become increasingly available in recent years. Prices for all activities are negotiable, particularly outside peak season, and are significantly lower than comparable Mediterranean resorts in Spain or southern France.
Is Tangier worth visiting beyond the beach?
Tangier is one of Morocco's most culturally rich and historically fascinating cities, fully deserving of significant time beyond beach visits. The UNESCO-listed medina and Kasbah contain centuries of layered Phoenician, Roman, Berber, Arab, Portuguese, Spanish, British, and French history within their narrow lanes. The legendary literary history — Tangier was favored by Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, and many others during the 1950s–60s "International Zone" era — gives the city a unique bohemian mythology. The Tangier Museum of Contemporary Art, the American Legation (sole US National Historic Landmark abroad), and Café Hafa all merit visits. The city has been undergoing rapid modernization while preserving its distinctive character.
