About M'Diq Beach

M'Diq (also spelled Mdiq or Mdeeq) is a coastal resort town 18km north of Tetouan and 9km north of Martil on Morocco's northern Mediterranean coast, wedged between Cabo Negro headland to the north and the dramatic landscape of the Jebel Moussa mountains rising inland to the south and east. Its beach is a wide, well-maintained stretch of Mediterranean sand — broader and slightly less crowded than Martil's famous beach further south, with comparably warm, calm waters and a more structured tourist infrastructure. The beach runs south from the modern fishing harbour breakwater for approximately 2km, providing generous space even in the peak summer weeks.

What distinguishes M'Diq from other beach towns on this coast is the continued working reality of its fishing harbour, located at the northern end of the beach behind a substantial breakwater. Several dozen traditional blue-painted fishing boats operate from the harbour, returning daily with catches of sea bream, bass, mullet, sardines, and other Mediterranean species that then appear within hours on the tables of the restaurants lining the seafront. The combination of authentic harbour activity — nets being mended on the quayside, fishermen washing their boats in the shallows, cats pursuing the day's scraps — with the holiday atmosphere of the adjacent beach creates an atmosphere that feels genuinely Moroccan rather than generically resort-like.

The town behind the beach has expanded dramatically from a small fishing village into a substantial resort community, now featuring a Carrefour supermarket, a Zone Artisanale with handicrafts workshops, and a concentrating strip of hotels ranging from budget apartments to comfortable three-star establishments. The mountain scenery directly behind M'Diq is unusual for a beach resort — the steep forested slopes of the Rif foothills rise dramatically from the coast just a few kilometres inland, providing a spectacular backdrop for the beach and offering hiking access to viewpoints and mountain villages for visitors who want an activity alternative to beach days.

Visitor Information

Getting There

M'Diq is 18km north of Tetouan and 9km north of Martil via the coastal N13 road. Grand taxis run frequently between Tetouan's grand taxi station and M'Diq (approximately 30 minutes). From Martil, petit-taxis connect the two towns in around 15 minutes. Tangier is approximately 65km to the west via the coastal road or the A7 toll motorway. The nearest major airport is Tangier Ibn Battouta (TNG), approximately 90km west. Parking is available behind the promenade and near the fishing harbour, but becomes very scarce in July and August.

Best Time to Visit

July through September is peak season for beach activities, with sea temperatures reaching 21–26°C and consistently sunny, warm weather. Late June offers a sweet spot of good water temperatures with pre-peak crowds. September is particularly enjoyable — the sea is at its warmest (it retains summer heat well into autumn), the crowds thin significantly after Moroccan summer holidays end, and the mountain light is spectacular. For exploring the town and harbour culture rather than swimming, April–May and October are pleasant and peaceful.

Tips

Visit the fishing harbour at dawn or early morning when boats return and the fish market is at its liveliest — this is one of the most authentic scenes on Morocco's entire northern coast. The harbour restaurants offer the freshest fish on the coast at very competitive prices; choose your fish at the counter and it will be grilled to order. For a panoramic view over M'Diq beach and the full coastal strip toward Martil, the road climbing from M'Diq toward Cabo Negro golf course provides spectacular elevated views. Combine with Tetouan's UNESCO medina (30 minutes south by taxi) for a complete cultural and beach experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is M'Diq or Martil better for a family beach holiday?
Both beaches offer excellent family conditions with warm, calm Mediterranean water and sandy shores, but they have somewhat different characters that suit different preferences. Martil has the larger, more energetic beach with the famous promenade and the most intense authentic Moroccan summer beach atmosphere — ideal for families who want total immersion in local seaside culture. M'Diq has a slightly more organized resort feel, better hotel infrastructure, and the added attraction of the working fishing harbour, which children often find fascinating. M'Diq also sits slightly closer to Cabo Negro's more upscale facilities. Overall, both are excellent family destinations; M'Diq is marginally more comfortable for families seeking standard resort amenities, while Martil offers the more memorable cultural experience.
What fishing does M'Diq's harbour support?
M'Diq's harbour supports an active small-scale commercial fishing fleet focused primarily on inshore Mediterranean species. The main catches include sea bream (Pagre and Daurade), European sea bass, striped red mullet, common octopus, cuttlefish, Mediterranean sardine, and various rockfish species. The fleet operates predominantly with nets and longlines, targeting the rocky reef structures and sandy bottom zones between M'Diq and Cabo Negro. The harbour also supports a secondary trade in dried and salted fish. The daily fish market at the harbour (busiest in the early morning) gives visitors a vivid picture of the variety and abundance of Mediterranean marine life available directly off this coast, and many restaurants buy their stock directly from the boats each morning.
Can you day-trip to Ceuta from M'Diq?
Yes — Ceuta, the Spanish autonomous city and EU enclave on the northern tip of Morocco, is approximately 25km north of M'Diq via the N13 coastal road, making it an easy and fascinating day trip. Crossing the border at Tarajal requires valid documentation (EU citizens use their national ID card; others need a passport), and queues can be significant at busy times. Ceuta itself is a unique destination — a piece of Spain physically located in North Africa, with Spanish architecture, cuisine, shops, and currency (Euro), surrounded entirely by Moroccan territory and overlooking the Strait. The combination of Spanish city-visit, duty-free shopping, and the remarkable geography of the Ceuta peninsula makes it an interesting cultural contrast to the Moroccan beach experience at M'Diq.
