About Martil Beach

Martil Beach is the main seaside resort beach of Tetouan, Morocco's northernmost major city and home to one of the finest UNESCO-listed medinas in the Islamic world. The beach stretches for approximately 6km along the northern Mediterranean coast at the mouth of the Martil River, forming a broad arc of golden-brown sand with the calm, warm waters of the western Mediterranean lapping gently in summer. It functions as a classic Moroccan family summer beach destination — filling spectacularly from late June through August as hundreds of thousands of Moroccan families from Tetouan, the interior Rif Mountain communities, and beyond descend to the coast for their summer holidays, creating an exuberant, entirely authentic celebration of seaside life that is one of the most vivid spectacles in Morocco.

The Martil promenade is the social heart of the beach experience — a long pedestrian boulevard lined with cafes serving fresh-squeezed juices, traditional Moroccan snacks, and grilled sardines directly from the fishing boats that work the estuary mouth. Amusement stands, ice cream vendors, and music from beach-side sound systems create an atmosphere that is uniquely and unmistakably Moroccan, entirely distinct from the international resort culture of Europe's southern beaches. Mediterranean water temperatures here are among the warmest in Morocco, reaching 25–28°C by August, and the sea is notably calmer and more sheltered than the Atlantic beaches to the west — producing ideal conditions for families with young children learning to swim.

The Martil estuary adds ecological interest to the beach's southern end, where the river's slow outflow into the sea creates a natural shallow zone popular with children and waders. The nearby town of Martil itself, grown enormously from a small fishing village into a substantial beach resort, has a good selection of accommodation from simple pensions to mid-range hotels, making it a viable base for exploring Tetouan's medina (just 10km inland) and the wider Tetouan Mediterranean coast including M'Diq and Cabo Negro to the north.

Visitor Information

Getting There

Martil is 10km east of Tetouan city center, connected by frequent grand taxis and local buses running throughout the day (around 20 minutes). Tetouan itself is accessible from Tangier by grand taxi or train (46km west, approximately 1 hour by road). The nearest airport is Tangier Ibn Battouta (TNG), approximately 90km west by road. Alternatively, Ceuta/Melilla ferry connections to southern Spain serve nearby ports. From Martil, local taxis connect to M'Diq (8km north) and Tetouan medina. Parking is available along the promenade road but fills completely in July and August.

Best Time to Visit

July through September delivers the finest Mediterranean swimming conditions — warm, calm seas, very high temperatures, and maximum atmosphere. July and August are intensely crowded with the full summer migration of Moroccan families, which makes for a vibrant experience but requires advance accommodation booking. Late June and September offer warm water and beautiful weather with somewhat manageable crowd levels. Spring (April–May) brings pleasant coastal weather and very few visitors, though sea temperature is still cool for swimming (around 18°C). The beach is essentially empty outside summer.

Tips

Book accommodation in Martil several months ahead for July and August. The morning is the best time for a comfortable beach visit before afternoon heat and crowds peak. The grilled sardine stalls along the promenade represent some of the best-value fresh seafood anywhere in Morocco — a full plate with bread and salad costs just a few dirhams. Do not miss a morning visit to Tetouan's medina, one of the least-touristed major medinas in Morocco, where you can wander Andalusian-influenced architecture and genuine neighbourhood market life almost without other tourists even in summer. Bring cash — many smaller establishments do not accept cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tetouan's medina worth visiting from Martil?
Absolutely — Tetouan's medina is one of the most remarkable and least-visited UNESCO World Heritage sites in Morocco, inscribed in 1997 for its exceptional preservation of Hispano-Moorish urban architecture reflecting the cultural fusion created when Andalusian Muslims and Jews expelled from Spain in the late 15th century settled here and rebuilt their lost city. Unlike Fez or Marrakech, Tetouan's medina receives relatively few international tourists, meaning visitors can experience genuine neighbourhood market life, authentic crafts workshops, and everyday Moroccan urban culture without the tourist-oriented overlay that characterises more visited medinas. The Tetouan School of Arts and Crafts (one of Morocco's oldest cultural institutions) and the Royal Museum are both within the medina and worth seeking out. A taxi from Martil takes under 20 minutes.
How does Martil compare to other Moroccan beach resorts?
Martil offers a genuinely distinct experience from Morocco's other major beach resorts. Unlike Agadir (which is heavily Western-oriented) or the Saïdia/M'Diq resort strip (which caters to upper-middle-class Moroccan families), Martil has a more democratic, grassroots energy drawing families from across the entire social spectrum. The level of tourist infrastructure for international visitors is lower than Agadir or the Atlantic surf towns, which means accommodation prices are lower but facilities are also more basic. The Mediterranean conditions are unique — warmer and calmer than Morocco's Atlantic beaches. For travellers seeking an immersive, authentic experience of Moroccan summer beach culture as lived by Moroccan families themselves, Martil is genuinely one of the most interesting beach destinations in North Africa.
What is the water quality like at Martil Beach?
Water quality at Martil has improved significantly over the past decade following coastal clean-up programmes by the Tetouan regional government, and the beach now regularly meets EU Blue Flag guideline standards during the official summer monitoring season (June–September). The proximity of the Martil River estuary means the southern end of the beach near the river mouth can experience slightly lower clarity after heavy rain events washing silt from the Rif Mountains, but the central and northern sections of the beach are generally clean and clear. Water temperature is among the warmest in Morocco — reaching 25–28°C in August — due to the sheltered western Mediterranean basin dynamics, making Martil one of the most comfortable Mediterranean swimming destinations in North Africa.
