About Haouzia Beach

Haouzia Beach lies just south of El Jadida, one of Morocco's most historically fascinating cities. El Jadida's Portuguese Cistern and the old medina walls are UNESCO World Heritage-listed — a legacy of the 16th-century Portuguese fortification that turned this Atlantic location into one of North Africa's most strategically important colonial harbours. The beach at Haouzia forms the southern coastal edge of this historic area, a wide Atlantic strand backed by dense pine forest that was planted in the early 20th century to stabilise the dunes and has since created a cool, shaded hinterland immediately behind the beach — a luxury rarely found on West African Atlantic coasts.

The beach itself is generous by any standard: wide, sandy, and typically much quieter than the comparable Atlantic beaches at Casablanca or Agadir. The Atlantic here delivers clean, consistent swell that is suitable for beginner and intermediate surfing, and the beach's relative obscurity on the international tourism circuit means the breaks rarely get crowded. Local surfers from El Jadida and nearby Casablanca make good use of it, particularly on autumn and winter swells, but in summer the waves flatten and the beach becomes ideal for family swimming, beach games and the kind of leisurely beach day that feels impossible at more famous resorts.

The combination of beach, forest, and El Jadida's extraordinary historical heritage makes this one of the most rewarding beach stops on the entire Moroccan Atlantic coast. The Portuguese Cistern — a vast underground water reservoir whose vaulted columns and flooded floor create an eerie, beautiful subterranean space — is unlike anything else in Morocco. The city's medina walls, Jewish quarter (mellah) and colonial-era architecture are beautifully preserved. Haouzia is the ideal beach complement to a morning or afternoon exploring El Jadida's old quarter — swim, eat grilled fish on the beach, then spend the evening in one of Morocco's most atmospheric historic cities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Haouzia Beach suitable for children?

Yes, in summer when the Atlantic swell is calmer. In good conditions the beach shelves gradually, the waves are manageable, and the wide sandy beach provides plenty of space. In autumn and winter, swell increases and the beach becomes better suited for surfing. Always check conditions and supervise children near any Atlantic beach due to potential rip currents.

What is the Portuguese Cistern in El Jadida?

The Portuguese Cistern (Citerne Portugaise) is a 16th-century underground water reservoir built by the Portuguese inside their fortified city. Its vaulted stone arches are reflected in a thin layer of water on the floor, creating one of the most hauntingly beautiful interior spaces in Morocco. Orson Welles famously filmed part of his adaptation of Othello here. Located inside the old medina walls, it's a 5-minute walk from the seafront.

Can I get from Casablanca to El Jadida and back in a day?

Comfortably. The N1 highway makes the drive about 90 minutes each way. By public transport, the CTM or Supratours bus from Casablanca Ouled Ziane takes 2 hours. Allow 4-5 hours in El Jadida for beach time at Haouzia and the old city, then return comfortably the same day. An early start from Casablanca is recommended.
