About Charrana Beach

Charrana Beach is the main seagoing beach of Nador, Morocco's largest city on the Mediterranean coast east of Al Hoceima. Unlike the city's other aquatic feature β€” the famous Marchica Lagoon β€” Charrana faces directly onto the open Mediterranean, delivering the combination of proper sea breeze, breaking waves and broad sandy horizons that many visitors prefer. The beach stretches for several kilometres along the coast north of the city, with the width of sandy beach expanding and contracting with the seasons but generous enough throughout summer to accommodate the large local crowds.

Nador is known as a hub for the Moroccan diaspora β€” particularly from Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain β€” who return in vast numbers during the summer. This gives Charrana Beach in July and August a particularly lively, multilingual character unlike most Moroccan beaches: vendors selling everything from grilled corn to sunglasses, impromptu football games on the sand, dense clusters of beach umbrellas in family groups, and excellent local seafood at the promenade restaurants. It is emphatically a Moroccan family beach experience, and for visitors interested in authentic Moroccan coastal culture rather than international resort amenities, Charrana delivers abundantly.

The Mediterranean water here is warm by late June and typically remains very swimmable through October. Waves are gentle by Atlantic standards β€” ideal for young children β€” and the sandy bottom shelves gradually, creating safe shallow paddling areas well offshore. The Rif Mountains provide a visible backdrop 30-40km to the west, and on clear days the mountains of southern Spain are faintly visible to the north. Coming from the more developed tourist beaches of Tetouan or Al Hoceima, Charrana feels pleasantly unpolished and genuine β€” an authentic window into how Moroccan families actually enjoy the sea.

Visitor Information

πŸš— Getting There

Nador has an international airport (Nador Al Aroui) with connections to European cities, particularly during summer. From the city centre a taxi to Charrana Beach takes about 10-15 minutes. Local buses run along the beach road in summer. From Al Hoceima it's 80km by the coastal highway.

πŸ“… Best Time to Visit

July–August for the most lively atmosphere and warmest water, though the beach is very crowded during peak diaspora return season. June and September offer warm conditions with significantly fewer people. Outside summer the beach is quiet and facilities minimal.

πŸ’‘ Visitor Tips

Combine with a visit to Marchica Lagoon for a completely different beach experience just a few kilometres away. The lagoon is calmer and more tranquil; Charrana is more energetic. Nador's old medina and the scenic corniche promenade are worth exploring alongside beach days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Charrana Beach and Marchica Lagoon?

Charrana is an open Mediterranean beach with real waves, salt air and a lively sandy beach vibe. Marchica is a vast coastal lagoon β€” shallow, glassy-calm, warmer, and becoming a major resort development zone. They're completely different experiences; Charrana is more natural while Marchica is seeing major infrastructure investment.

Is Charrana Beach clean and safe for swimming?

In summer, water quality is generally good and the beach is maintained. There are lifeguard posts during peak season. Like all popular Moroccan urban beaches, it can get crowded and there may be litter at some sections β€” choose sections away from the busiest zones for a cleaner experience.

Is Nador worth visiting for tourists?

Nador is primarily a Moroccan city rather than a tourist destination β€” which is part of its appeal for travellers wanting authentic Moroccan culture. The city offers good food, an interesting dual-culture character (Amazigh/Arabic/European diaspora), proximity to Al Hoceima National Park, and the unique Marchica Lagoon development alongside traditional beach culture.
