Cabo Negro (Arabic: Ras Aswad, "Black Cape") is a small promontory headland 21km north of Tetouan on the Mediterranean coast, home to Morocco's most prestigious beach resort zone. Unlike the broad, democratic popular beaches of Martil and M'Diq further south, Cabo Negro has developed over decades into an enclave of upper-class Moroccan and international tourism, anchored by the presence of the Moroccan Royal Family's summer palace, an 18-hole royal golf course, a Club Méditerranée property, and a concentration of private villas and upscale apartment compounds behind its narrow but immaculate beach. The exclusivity of the zone is visible immediately upon arrival — security is heavier than elsewhere on the coast, the roads are well-maintained, and the overall atmosphere is several registers quieter and more carefully groomed than the boisterous resort towns to the south.
The beach itself is naturally narrower than Martil's broad arc, but compensates in water quality and clarity. Sheltered in a small bay on the northern side of the Cabo Negro headland, the beach experiences very gentle wave action in summer, producing crystal-clear Mediterranean water visibility of 8–12 metres on good days. Rocky points on both sides of the sandy central section create accessible snorkeling territory, and the combination of clean water, manageable crowds, and good sun exposure from south-facing orientation makes it one of the most genuinely pleasant swimming beaches on Morocco's Mediterranean shoreline. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available through the beach club operators at the top of the beach.
The Royal Golf Cabo Negro, located on the headland behind the beach, is one of Morocco's finest golf courses — a challenging 18-hole championship layout with dramatic sea views designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and set among eucalyptus forests with the Mediterranean glittering below. The clubhouse and pro shop are open to visiting golfers by advance booking, and the combination of a morning on the course followed by an afternoon on the beach creates a particularly civilized day in this corner of Morocco. Cabo Negro also makes an excellent base for day trips to Ceuta (20km north) and Tetouan's medina (21km south).
Cabo Negro is 3km north of M'Diq along the N13 coastal road, and 21km north of Tetouan. Grand taxis from Tetouan or M'Diq serve Cabo Negro throughout the day. From Tangier (65km west), drive along the N13 coast road or use the A7 motorway to Tetouan and then the coast road north. The Club Med property at Cabo Negro serves as an orientation landmark. Most visitors to Cabo Negro stay in the zone's hotels, villas, or apartments — day-trippers can access the public beach via the beach access road at the base of the headland. The Royal Golf course is accessible by car on a separate road behind the promontory.
July through September brings optimal beach conditions — warm Mediterranean water (21–26°C), consistent sunshine, and the full operaiton of beach club facilities. Unlike Martil's beach, Cabo Negro never becomes overwhelmingly crowded, making it relatively pleasant throughout the peak summer weeks. Late September is particularly appealing when the summer's warmth lingers in the sea, the crowds thin, and the mountain light on the Rif backdrop becomes particularly dramatic. Golf visiting is best in spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) when temperatures are moderate and the course is in finest condition.
Book beach club access or golf tee times in advance, particularly for July and August. The beach access road from the N13 is signposted; follow signs for "Plage Cabo Negro" or "Club Med." Water shoes are recommended for the rocky approaches to the snorkeling zones on the sides of the beach. The seafood at the beachside restaurants costs somewhat more than M'Diq or Martil but quality is excellent. Ceuta is just 20km north — its duty-free status and Spanish atmosphere make it a fascinating half-day trip. Respect the security perimeter around the royal palace compound visible on the hillside above the beach.
