Santa Maria Beach is one of the most celebrated snorkelling destinations on the Baja Peninsula, sheltered within a pristine crescent-shaped bay midway along the Los Cabos Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Designated as a federally protected marine reserve, the bay's tight horseshoe shape calms the Pacific swell and creates near-constant glassy conditions — making it reliably swimmable when rougher beaches along the coast are not.
The underwater world here is what draws snorkellers from around the world. Large coral heads rise from a sandy floor, and the rocky outcrops on either side of the bay shelter an impressive density of marine life. Hawksbill sea turtles graze on the reef, schools of sergeant majors and damselfish shimmer in the shallows, and the occasional spotted eagle ray glides through the deeper water. Despite its fame, the protected status means visitor numbers are moderated and the reef remains genuinely healthy.
Above the waterline, Santa Maria is equally beautiful. The cove feels secluded despite being accessible by road, with rocky headlands protecting it on both sides and desert-meets-sea scenery unique to Baja California. Facilities are intentionally minimal to preserve the natural character. Bring everything you need — snorkel gear, water, sun protection, and snacks — and settle in for a day of pure, unspoiled Pacific Mexico.
The beach is accessed via a dirt road and across sand. Minimal infrastructure means access for visitors with mobility limitations is challenging. The water entry is gentle and shallow, making it manageable for confident swimmers once at the shoreline. No wheelchair facilities on-site.
Located on the Corridor (Mexico Highway 1), roughly 12 km east of Cabo San Lucas. A small dirt access road leads to the beach. Taxis and rental cars are the primary options — there is no public transport to this beach. Many visitors join guided snorkel boat tours from Medano Beach, Cabo marina.
