About Playa Pescadores

While much of Tulum's coastline has been colonised by boutique eco-hotels and Instagram-famous beach clubs, Playa Pescadores — "Fishermen's Beach" — remains a working fishing village beach that holds a mirror to the authentic Yucatán coastal life. Wooden fishing boats called pangas rest on the sand beside nets hung out to dry, and in the early mornings the local fishermen bring in their catches of snapper, barracuda, and lobster.

The beach itself shares all the extraordinary natural qualities of this stretch of the Riviera Maya: powdery white sand so reflective it almost glows, and water of such vivid turquoise clarity that you can count your toes in two metres of depth. Simple seafood restaurants along the beachfront serve the freshest ceviche and grilled fish on the coast — far more authentic and affordable than the beach clubs that dominate Tulum's hotel zone further north.

Playa Pescadores is a favourite with travellers who want to connect with a slower, more genuine side of the Riviera Maya. The absence of beach club umbrellas, DJ sets, and overpriced cocktails is replaced by coconut palms, sea breezes, and a quality of stillness that's increasingly rare on this stretch of coast. It's the perfect complement to Tulum's famous Mayan archaeological site, just a few kilometres away.
