Playa Chac Mool occupies the km 9.5 position in Cancun's Hotel Zone — right at the elbow where the barrier island bends and the beach begins to face more directly into the prevailing Caribbean swells. This orientation gives Chac Mool noticeably more wave energy than the northern beaches, making it a popular spot for bodyboarders and anyone who wants a more invigorating ocean experience.
The beach is wide and generous, with the quintessential Cancun visual: fine white quartz sand and that incredible transparent blue-green water that makes the Caribbean famous. Several well-established beach clubs frame the beach, including bars, sunbed areas, and restaurants where seafood cocktails and frozen margaritas are the order of the day. Access from the public beach zone is always free.
Playa Chac Mool is named for the ancient Mayan rain deity whose reclining stone figure — a significant archaeological find — was discovered in this part of the Yucatán. Today the name adorns one of Cancun's liveliest public areas, and the beach remains a favourite gathering point for tourists from every corner of the Hotel Zone.
Well-served by the Hotel Zone bus. The beach itself is accessed via public access points between commercial beach clubs. Waves are moderate — check flags before swimming. Generally suitable for confident swimmers.
The R-1 Hotel Zone bus stops directly at km 9.5. Walking distance from many central Hotel Zone hotels. Taxis are plentiful all along the boulevard. Free public beach access between the beach clubs.
