Akumal Beach, meaning "Place of the Turtles" in Mayan, is world-famous for its resident sea turtle population. Snorkelers can swim alongside these gentle giants in the calm, clear waters of this protected bay. The beach combines incredible marine life with beautiful Caribbean scenery.
Sea turtle conservation is at the heart of Akumal's identity. The bay's seagrass beds provide vital feeding grounds for green and loggerhead sea turtles, and local conservation organizations work tirelessly to protect both the turtles and their habitat. Visitors are now required to snorkel with licensed guides to minimize disturbance to the animals, ensuring these magnificent creatures continue to thrive for generations to come.
Beyond the turtles, Akumal Bay is home to a vibrant coral reef ecosystem teeming with tropical fish, rays, and other marine life. The calm, sheltered waters make it an ideal spot for beginner snorkelers, while more experienced divers can explore the deeper reefs offshore. The nearby Yal-Ku Lagoon offers another spectacular snorkeling experience where freshwater meets the sea.
Flat access to the beach from the entrance area. Paved walkways lead to the sand. The gentle slope into the water makes it accessible for most visitors.
Paid parking at the entrance. Arrive early during peak season as spaces fill up quickly. A small conservation fee is charged upon entry to support turtle protection efforts.
