About Ramla Bay

Ramla Bay (Ir-Ramla l-Ħamra, meaning "the red sandy beach") is the largest and most celebrated beach on the island of Gozo. Its striking red-orange sand — unique in the Maltese archipelago — stretches in a wide crescent between two green hillsides that tumble down to the Mediterranean. The colour comes from iron-rich minerals in the surrounding clay, creating a landscape that feels almost otherworldly compared to typical Mediterranean beaches.

High on the eastern cliff above the bay sits Calypso Cave, traditionally identified as the cave where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive for seven years in Homer's Odyssey. While the cave itself is modest, the viewpoint above it offers one of the most photographed panoramas in Malta — the entire sweep of Ramla Bay laid out below in a patchwork of orange sand and turquoise water. A viewing platform makes it easy to take in the scene.

The beach is well-equipped for a day visit, with sunbed and umbrella hire, kiosks selling drinks and snacks, and a car park at the back of the bay. The water deepens gradually, making it safe for families, and the sand is soft underfoot. Behind the beach, Roman-era ruins can be glimpsed among the farmland, a reminder that this coast has attracted visitors for millennia. Ramla Bay is a must-visit on any trip to Gozo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the sand at Ramla Bay red?
The distinctive red-orange colour of Ramla Bay's sand comes from iron-rich minerals in the surrounding Blue Clay geological formation. As the clay erodes and mixes with the sand, it gives it the warm reddish hue that is unique among Maltese beaches. The colour is most vivid when the sand is wet.
How do I get to Gozo from Malta?
Take the Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa (Malta's northern tip) to Mġarr harbour on Gozo. The crossing takes about 25 minutes and runs frequently from early morning to late night. You can bring a car or travel as a foot passenger. From Mġarr, buses and taxis connect to Ramla Bay.
Can I visit Calypso Cave?
The cave itself is largely closed for safety reasons due to rock instability, but the viewing platform above it remains open and offers spectacular views of Ramla Bay and the north Gozo coastline. You can reach the viewpoint by car or on foot from the beach via a steep path up the eastern hillside.
