About Gnejna Bay

Għejna Bay is a small, picturesque cove tucked along Malta's rocky northwest coast, just south of the better-known Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa. While its famous neighbours draw the crowds, Għejna remains a quieter alternative — a place where you can spread out on a mix of sand and smooth pebbles with plenty of space to breathe, even in peak summer.

The bay is framed by sculpted clay cliffs that glow in warm earth tones, creating a dramatic natural backdrop. The water here is clear and blue, deepening steadily from the shore. The sandy-pebbly seabed makes for interesting wading, and the rocky edges of the bay offer decent snorkeling among small fish and marine life. On calm days the water is perfectly still, reflecting the cliff colours like a mirror.

Facilities are minimal — a small seasonal kiosk may sell drinks and ice cream, but nothing is guaranteed. There are no sunbed concessions, preserving the natural character of the bay. Parking is available in a small area at the top of the slope leading down to the beach. The surrounding area is popular with walkers, and a coastal path connects Għejna to Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay, making it possible to explore all three beaches in a single visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Għejna Bay less crowded than Golden Bay?
Yes, significantly so. Għejna Bay sees a fraction of the visitors that Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa attract. Even on busy summer weekends, you'll find more space here. The lack of public transport access and minimal facilities act as natural crowd filters. It's ideal for those seeking a quieter beach experience.
Is the beach sandy or pebbly?
Għejna Bay has a mix of both. The central section has patches of soft sand, while the edges and entrance to the water are more pebbly. Bringing water shoes makes walking more comfortable, especially on the pebbly parts. The mix changes slightly depending on seasonal wave patterns and winter storms.
Can I walk from Golden Bay to Għejna Bay?
Yes, a scenic coastal path connects Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa, and Għejna Bay. The walk from Golden Bay to Għejna takes about 20-30 minutes along the cliff tops with beautiful sea views. It's a moderately easy walk, though some sections are uneven. Bring water and sun protection.
